How would Marvin Hagler have fared in the 70s/80s?

Would he still have been a consensus top 3 MW of all time? Would he have picked up a couple of more losses along the way?

Would other opportunities at different weights be a priority in this time period?

Can you imagine Hagler fighting the likes of Nonpariel Dempsey and Bob Fitz? Hagler would be a hobo living off the railroads in the 80s

 

The same. He’s an all-time great and head to head he’d have beaten Monzon IMO.

 

Actually according to modernists he's a blown up featherweight, same as Marciano

 

I thought you were talking about the 1970`-80`s, lol! I don`t know as much as these other guys about the 1870`-80`s. I feel the fight game had moved on a bit in 100 years though. Hagler`s conditioning would have been far better than any middle at that time and his abs would be more defined taking body shots better, Bob Fitz still might have got him in the slats though, I don`t know what Bob`s lightest wieght was but I think LH`s were smaller back then and middle`s wouldn`t have had biceps as big as Marvins, detailed enough?

 

Fitzsimmons moved up from light heavy didn`t he? I think light heavies were smaller back then and I`ve seen footage of Bob and pics and his biceps looked smaller than Hagler`s were, did you know that Tommy Hearns had 15 inch biceps at super middle when he fought James 'the heat'?! Ali`s biceps were measued at 15 inches during the 60`s!

Nonpariel Dempsey was a different fighter than the more famous Jack, but I`ve got a feeling you might know that!

 

My bad. I have seen this name thrown about but assumed it was some "Tokyo Douglas" type spin lol, with Jack Dempsey having some excellent performance in a place called Nonpariel.

 

I feel in the 70s he would pretty much be learning his craft and finding his way. He may qualify for a title shot, but chances are he will not be ready and will blow it. With the title shot experience behind him though, I feel strongly if given another chance, he will win it and stay champion for many years. But, he needs to watch out for Jimmy McLarnin. Kid Gavilan. Luis Rodrigues. Jose Napoles and esp Sugar Ray Robinson. Because if any one of these former welterweight champions gets the fighting itch to return to g l o r y The Hag will be in trouble.

 

If im gonna be serious for a second, the physiques of oldschool fighters were incredible

^Bob Armstrong, Young Peter Jackson, Danny Kramer, and Tom Sharkey, all fighters of the 1800s to early 1900s, across multiple weight classes.

Combined with the fact that these guys didnt weightlift at all (it was taboo in boxing, calisthenics and band tension work was "the way to go"), and the fact that Marvin Hagler was most likely on steroids, which increases hypertrophy effects from workouts, then I'd say that we havent improved too much from oldschool.

Btw there was a change somewhere in the 70s/80s where fighters were allowed to flex for their measurements, which explains alot of the disparages in the TOTTs. TOTTs for oldschool fighters are just unreliable anyways. Ive seen sources that list Sonny Liston's fist as 14" and 16", and Marciano's height anywhere from 5'10 1/2" to 5'11 1/2"

The worst case of this is Battling Jim Johnson, who's listed was 5'9", 5'11" and 6'3" (though Samba actually had a post about this)

No? Fatasses like Povetkin, Ortiz and Stiverne are caught all the time. Anybody can be caught with steroids

It was EXTREMELY common for Hagler's time period, as PED test was still new and fresh for abuse, they didnt even know how to test for HGH at the time. That being said, if you'd follow natural bodybuilding, you'd know that there are some physiques that arent naturally obtainable without godtier genetics, so, especially for a boxer, who doesnt train for muscle hypertrophy, there are some boxers that i highly suspect.

Of course they could be some Primo Carnera/Eric Bugenhagen freak of nature but eh

 

I could see him drawing with Seales, going 2-1 over Monroe, beating Briscoe and unluckily drawing with Antuofermo. He'd beat Minter and avenge Vito before beating the likes of Duran, Roldan, Hearns and Mugabi. Maybe a decision loss to Leonard to conclude.
