Deontay Wilder could equal another long-time boxing record at heavyweight.

Hall of Famers Larry Holmes and Tommy Burns are currently tied for the most consecutive KOs in heavyweight title defenses.

Burns' eight straight came against - Bill Squires (1907), Gunner Moir, Jack Palmer, Jem Roche, Jewey Smith, Bill Squires (1908), Bill Squires (again in 1908) and Bill Lang.

Holmes' eight straight came against - Alfredo Evangelista, Ossie Ocasio, Mike Weaver, Earnie Shavers, Lorenzo Zanon, Leroy Jones, Scott Ledoux and Muhammad Ali.

If Wilder can stop Fury, Wilder's eight straight will have come against - Eric Molina, Johann Duhaupas, Artur Szpilka, Chris Arreola, Gerald Washington, Bermane Stiverne, Luis Ortiz and Tyson Fury.

Wilder is currently tied with Joe Louis at seven straight.

(Should be noted Joe Louis scored seven consecutive knockouts before winning on a DQ against Buddy Baer. Then Louis ran off another six consecutive KOs. Without the DQ, Louis would in first place by far.)

Can Wilder equal Holmes and Burns? We'll see on Saturday.

Classic example of how title proliferation creates meaningless statistics that have no real comparison to accomplishments in the pre-title fragmentation era.

Are you referring to Jewey Smith or Lorenzo Zanon?

Wilder should get an (*) next to his name, like Roger Maris got when he broke the Babe's HR record.

The number of tomato cans he's knocked out defending his paper trinket is irrelevant.

I am lobbying Jimmy Wales to change Wilders Wikipedia entry to include something like this "While on the face of it Windmill's record looks pretty good, his best win is against a pensioner, second best is against a fat buffet specialist. Please bear this in mind reader."

Wilder ranks above Vitali Klitschko on the ATG list if he beats Tyson Fury: Change My Mind

Check out Alfredo Evangelista, Lorenzo Zanon, Leroy Jones, Scott Ledoux, Bill Squires (who got two more title shots the following year after the one-round blowout loss posted above), Gunner Moir, the ghost of Muhammad Ali, etc.

Wilder's opponents are arguably/if not solidly better than both Burns and Holmes' opponents during the run.

If he goes to 41-0 with 40 KOs, and scores eight straight KOs in title defenses ... Wilder will be in the Hall of Fame before Joshua or Fury or any of them.

He's still got to do it, though.

    Either guy could win.

I just wanted to point out that this fight could be historically significant in more ways than just being for the Lineal world title.

Yeah because we know Joe Louis was fighting better fighters in his title fights right?

This "record", if made, will be poison/a stain to/on our sport.

Realistically, if Wilder goes 41-0 with 40 KOs then Fury is extraordinarily unlikely to end up with a name which is talked about in any "Hall of fame" sense in future years - the Klitschko fight will probably be seen as more of an anomaly.
