Fury is a true boxer, Joshua and Wilder are just good athletes with mediocre skills.

Heard and read some interesting insights by Brin Jonathan Butler, boxing writer best known for articles on Cubans - he was following Rigondeaux around well before he ever got near a title. Brin spent a few days in Wilder's camp and in his home-town. He asked Mark Breland, how do Wilder's skills compare with yours? Mark said “He’s at about where I was at 11.” Brin saw Wilder spar around 16 rounds against mediocre partners... Wilder was probably second best in 10 of them. He regards Wilder as probably the single most basic and least skilled champion he has ever seen. But he still thinks Deontay will win.... he saw enough of that overhand right to rate the windmill of death as real...

Not sure if I agree... usually a "puncher's chance" is no chance... but it was an interesting insight. For me, the big unknown is Fury's condition... I do not believe you can gain and lose 10 stone with no ill-effects... and against Wilder a loss of milliseconds of anticipating that big right hand could be devastating. Heart says Fury, head says Wilder by sudden KO (probably after losing every preceding round).

The current heavyweight landscape is a horrific vomit even comparing to Klitschkos era. Or Tysons era.
Even second tier Klitschko era fighters like Ibragimov, Peter or Chagaev would be competitive with Wilder and Joshua.

 I was actually thinking about how Ibragimov would fare against Donkey just this morning. I'm very confident he would've sparked him and I think he would've done so before round 4 or 5.

Fury is athletically gifted and a true boxer, except he has polar bear genes. I am not insulting Fury by calling him a bear FYI

I am actually quite enjoying the HW scene right now.

Not because of the skill level, but because of how its going to play out over the next year.

I agree that AJ and Wilder have flaws, as does every boxer, but its only about beating who you can beat in your era, and the thought of AJ vs fury\wilder, and Fury vs Wilder, and the few other contenders in the mix really interests me, regardless of the fact that a fighter from the past was better than them.

Some really great fights to be made over the next year. Just enjoy it.

That's been confirmed by many different sources, a number of whom witnessed it in person.

    James Ali Bashir
Javan ''Sugar'' Hill (Manny Steward's nephew)
The poster Chef who was the Klitschko brother's chef and camp manager
    Andy Lee
    Johnny Nelson

Nelson reckons it's the worst kept secret in boxing that Wlad sparked Donkey x 2 in camp but at the very least he dropped him heavily x 2 and hurt him badly.

Fury is going to win. Wilder is a fraud and we all know it.

    "Just athletes", "Mediocre skills".

I've never been an elite athlete, nor have I been a professional fighter - but I've done enough of both to appreciate what both involve... there is no "only" or "mediocre" with either of those guys. Every fighter has holes in their game, but this is talk is ******ed.

I sort of agree with the OP's titular assertion, but it boils things down with just a smidgen too reductionist a bent.

I'd say there's a continuum of athleticism that goes:

    Wilder >>>> Joshua >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fury.

and then a continuum of boxing skill that goes:

    Fury >>>> Joshua >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wilder.

If Fury was 6 foot 3 would his style be as effective? Or would he just be Hughie Fury?

I don't believe Fury is a master boxer, fighters like John McDermott outboxed Fury. Fury has lost rounds.

He isn't the Heavyweight Willie Pep, he has just developed a style that works for his size and is just extremely awkward for some fighters.

Sometimes you can be the most skilled guys, working hard at mastering your sport for so long, and then comes that athletic guy who surpasses you without effort. Tough luck, just like with ugly girls. Wilder is too athletic.
