Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I've ever seen him throw a straight right down the line? The right hands he throws are looping hooks or over the top. His arm is never fully extended! With the reach he has, that right hand would be even more deadly if he threw if straight armed
That is false. A looping shot is more powerful. Just try it on your own on a punch machine. For me its like 750-790 vs 790-830 on average with a personal record of 842 (with a looping right hand with instep weight transmittion just like wilder throws them)
them punch machines are for egotistical wannabe boxers who show off to their mates and think that the score they get means they hit as hard as Mike Tyson
What I say is true. Its a slower punch but it loads up more energy. Especially if with an instep combined with elastic recoil ala Wilder. And because of Wilder's athletics and overall measurements, he usually can get away with it against small and slow plodders.
No doubt a looping shot lands harder due to rotation that allows the more weight "energy" to accumulate in a single shot. But the Wilder's height and long arms would be better served behind a longer and straighter punch. Think that's the OPS's point.
