Almost exact contemporaries (Williams debuted five years earlier than Pirog, in 2000, and both fought until 2012 when debilitating injuries - traumatic & chronic respectively - permanently sidelined them) - they never crossed paths and in fact only ever had one common opponent, ironically the last one in both of their careers, a mere 2½ months apart, both taking wide unanimous decisions over Nobuhiro Ishida. They both, in subsequent years, became "what-if" stories and frequently appear in h2h fantasy match-ups at middleweight, leaving a sense of "unfinished business" especially as they were both poised for big fights when they were derailed by physical impairment. The men they were each due to face after Ishida - namely, Golovkin for Pirog and Canelo for Williams - later would embark upon a very lucrative rivalry dominating the sports' headlines for a few years.

"PTP" never actually wore a belt at middleweight, but is usually placed there in fantasy match-ups rather than welter & super welter (the divisions in which he primarily campaigned, and was a world & interim world champion) due to him always having seemed a "natural" MW boiling down to make the couple of subordinate classes' limits - and that is where he was planning on rounding out his career, when a motorcycle accident left his legs crippled for life. As for the Russian technician, he was just hitting the full stride of his prime and not yet two years into his WBO title reign when his back gave out, and many felt he was on the cusp of proving himself either the #1 middleweight of the era, or the second-best, pending the much-anticipated showdown with fellow unbeaten EE amateur superstar Gennady Golovkin that was sadly never to be.

This is an interesting match-up. You have a 6'1" southpaw with a nine inch reach advantage who brings in an excitingly unpredictable enigma's aura from one night to another (his chin at times seeming if not iron then at least very sturdy, and then you have Maravilla two-piecing him to a deep slumber; at times you would think his combination of physical dimensions, work-rate, stamina, power, and yes, counter-intuitively, his infighting skills despite his lankiness, would all make him a nightmare for anyone, including perhaps even the preeminent welterweight of his day, PBF, whom many claim ducked him ...and then on a given night he could let a B- contender in Quintana easily outbox him :nusenuse:) taking on a supreme boxer-puncher with a much lower volume but much greater precision in his offensive execution, and perhaps the slickest defense of any Williams opponent (which, mind you, includes Sergio Gabriel Martínez and Erislandy Lara!).

Pirog befuddled Jacobs, he would make Williams look like an incompetant fool worse than Lara did. Also because he is best remembered for the Jacobs fight people forget his norm was to throw 100 punches per round, Dima was a volume puncher.

Williams was pushed outta Welter, middlewight was too much imo for Punisher.
I wonder what Pirog is doing to make ends meet nowadays?

I heard Williams was able to invest in pproperties. No offense toPirog but probably made peanuts in boxing hope I'm Wrong boxing tends to suck. Pirog would probably be a Badass coach

Wow I haven't thought about Pirog in years. He looked awesome against Jacobs and Ishida but he got sidelined by back problems. I was super bummed out over that because he looked like he was ready to blossom into something special, although I do think GGG would have beaten him. Still, it would have been a fun rivalry.

Does anyone know how Paul Williams is doing? I mean, obviously he's still paralyzed, but is he doing well financially and healthwise other than being in a wheel chair?

With the kayo loss to Sergio and then the huge struggle against Lara it seemed like his career was winding down at the time of the accident. He had taken a lot of damage for being so young, and it kind of seemed like guys were learning how to deal with his style. Although he was skillful and awkward, it seemed like his success was disproportionately based on sheer volume punching.

I'd also like to know. I was a big fan way back when was a welterweight and it was a crying shame he got frozen out of the division when it was hot.

Wasn't there a chance he would be able to walk again down the line? I think it would be similar to the Jacobs fight. Williams bags some early rounds but Pirog figures him out and gets the come from behind stoppage.

Seems like a complete mismatch. Pirog outboxes him and stops him sooner or later.

Interesting to see how the passage of time has been unkind to Williams, in terms of a depreciation of esteem for him since he went out. As of when he was due to have fought Canelo, experts made that one even money or had PTP a slight underdog...

Of course, impressions of Canelo have gone up in the last six years - while Pirog has become sort of a mythical creature for many of us.

Pirog showed great promise at 160 and had appeared very strong there. Williams, on the other hand, had looked a little stretched at the weight.

I actually think it could have been a great scrap, for a while. However, it's difficult to envisage Williams getting control of Pirog, who would likely have been both too awkward and powerful for him to best.

My impressions are not ment to take anything away from William's. I was a huge Pirog fan from the first time I saw him. I was all over YouTube looking for anything I could on the guy ...sparring ..gym work. A real professor of boxing. I still watch new vids of him working with young men in the gym teaching them his unique techniques.
I believe he would have gone down as a great fighter.

I remember back when I joined this forum the promise of the young MW’s was all the rage. Pirog, Lee, Jacobs and of course I was touting and riding the Fernando Guerrero bandwagon leading the cheers that he would emerge as the best of the bunch. Lol I was off by just a touch, so my predictions might not be worth much.

I think Pirog would have beat Williams clear but close 8-4/7-5 type.

A shame we never got to see Pirog vs GGG or we might be debating the 2 Canelo vs Pirog controversies in general forum.

Yeah, thinking about the ripple effect across the division if both had remained uninjured is crazy.

I think PTP at middle would take Demetrius Andrade out behind the woodshed, personally. :nusenuse:
