Tyson clearly won the fight , but was also need to get our own house in order. But by the same measure how the f*** was Joshua up against Vlad on 2 out of the 3 cards ? It was the same kind of fight - Vlad the boxer making Joshua miss and looking amateur at times , then Joshua landing big shots. Vlad was at least 4 rounds up going into the 11th. Now it wasn't as clear cut as Tyson after 10 rounds but come on we are just as bad. We were just lucky that that one didn't go to the score cards and have to suffer the embarrassment of being a home cooked business.. peace.
Povetkin allegedly only won one round v AJ. Bellew was supposedly ahead v Usyk. Matchroom do plenty of cooking, which is why I found Barry Hearn's tweet a bit rich. My biggest worry for AJ/Fury would be a brutal decision. Nobody is getting the cards against AJ in London.
I thought Jack Reiss the ref did a great job. It's been said a British ref would tend to wave the fight off with a knockdown like that. But remember the one British judge Phil Edwards had the fight even 113-113. 7 rounds to 5 for Fury minus 2 for the kds. The US judge gave all first 4 rounds to Wilder. I knew that shoulder roll nonsense of Fury and the bending down would make him vulnerable.
Joshua outlanded Wlad in each of the first four rounds but the fight still felt close. It's an issue with how boxing is scored. For me, you could (should) be able to say those rounds were level. Both threw and landed very similar amounts. So no, I don't buy for a second that Wlad was making him look stupid. But it's also not fair to say that because Joshua landed eight punches to Wlads seven that Wlad deserves no credit.
I had no issue with Bellew being ahead. Usyk basically scoped him out for three rounds or so and barely landed a punch. He was always in control though. Bizarrely it reminded me of Floyd fighting McGregor. You get fighters who just give a round or two away to have a look at an opponent they just know they're better than. Plenty of close ish Matchroom cards over recent years which have gone the right way to be honest. Ritson, Crolla, Campbell for example. Plenty of fighters can get a home decision of course, and not just Matchroom. Anyone giving Fury the first McDermott fight is lying and Khan has got all sorts of help over the years. And who can forget Terry O'Connor practically holding Cleverly up in the Kovalev fight!
Sadly it happens all over the world, but people tend to point fingers. It used to be Germany being the scapegoat, but that's diminishing a bit right now. Just look at recent cards in Australia, Canada, Italy the US and the UK... all extremely bad, with the US leading the pack due to the number of fights they put up.
Ring generalship, effective aggression and defence are all considered by the judge as well as clean, hard shots. It isn’t fencing.
100% agree with this. Why Barry Hearn thought it was a good idea to hit send on that tweet is beyond me. Firstly he basically admitted that the $50m offer was real, then that he thought Joshua-Wilder would go to the cards and finally as if he thought there have never been any howlers on Matchroom cards- which there have and plenty. I completely agree that it would be very, very difficult for Fury to get the nod over AJ in London. I was slightly concerned pre fight as Ortiz was getting shafted before the KO. But Wilder is so inactive through large parts of rounds and he is so technically poor that I thought it would be obvious Fury was winning rounds. He was of course and to be fair the minute a fighter has two knockdowns to nil he has a shot as long as there are anything resembling 3-4 swing rounds. However, Joshua is technically better than Wilder, active and will come forward. Thus meaning that with the crowd roaring everything and with home town cooking Fury isn't likely to get much. Its the sad reality. That said, the fight won't happen anyway. With the broadcasting situation coupled with uncertainty around what Fury will do long run it'll likely be one we don't get or do when it is well past its sell by date.
I know that, but if you're landing more shots than your opponent it's hard to say you're not making a case for maybe winning the round.
Ok, but even if one fighter lands 7 shots to his opponents 5 that doesn’t tell the full story of the round does it? I mean cautious fighter A who’s on the backfoot close to the ropes might have landed 7 single jabs throughout the 3 minutes but fighter B who has fought on the front foot & used his ring IQ to cut the ring off manages to land a 3 punch flurry then later in the round does exactly the same and lands 2 more....who deserves to win the round more?? Surely it’s fighter A who has enforced his will and style on the fight. Maybe fighter B has won the round with setting traps, defence and hard clean shots...my point is, it’s subjective. Depends on whether you’re a Mexican judge or not.
Exactly. It's subjective. And in a fight where punches landed (as in Fury Wilder or Joshua Klitschko) were so close, you get close fights. I maintain judges being able to call more rounds even makes sense.
Punch stats are exactly that. Stats. Watch the fight to see which punches land effectively and exactly where and how they land. You might be surprised but 'compubox' punch stats are actually just two guys sitting ringside tapping 4 buttons on a laptop.
Wow what a horrible , horrible comparison. Just offensive to anyone of sound mind. Shot old VLAD was coming off a loss, without a win in three years, a grey haired saggy backed old man who never fought again. And you’re trying to compare him to the guy who schooled him in his own backyard to end his eleven year unbeaten reign as an ATG super champion? Your great great grandparents are ashamed of you son, awful punditry. I would bet your life savings that you are a proud subscriber of the sky tellie addicts corporation?
