I was quite surprised to see the amount of love and sympathy he received online. Absolutely none of it from me, personally.

Anyone remember that weird My Low Place dude? He had Stevenson as P4P No1 for ages for some weird reason. Anyway, he released a video after he was announced to be in a bad way and the guy actually ****ing cries

 

Karpency and Williams Jr. had both gotten to the 10th slot by the time they faced Stevenson, by virtue of wins over Dawson and E-Rod, respectively. They'd still be considered also-rans, but were both coming off solid wins to earn momentary rankings.

 

Beyond the fact that he paid off his mandatory and didn't initially seem enthused about making a fight with Kovalev, the quality of opposition for Stevenson's reign runs the gamut from perfectly acceptable to mediocre.

Dawson was coming off the loss to Ward, but was still favored to beat someone who was coming up from 168 to challenge; and Stevenson did produce the 2013 KOTY in the process.

Cloud (the first time he was stopped), Fonfara (first time), and Bellew (the only time Tony was dominated from start to finish) are all solid wins, really. Had a draw against Top 5 rated Jack, which is a serviceable result.

But there's that three year stretch where he faced Karpency and Williams Jr, along with Sukhotisky (whose best win was the KO2 over Kovalev challenger Mohammedi), faded 168 lb mainstay Bika, and Fonfara in an unnecessary rematch.

Kind of a mixed bag, with periods of quality book-ending a whole lot of nothing in between.

To my interpretation, if an ex-con turns their life around it means they dont return to re-offend, instead earning their keep lawfully. I have never read any interpretation of the term for an ex-con that means they turn into Mother Teresa.

If you mean you dislike his past, and thus him as a person like I do (I have frequently listed Stevenson as one of the boxers I dislike personally the most for reasons of female abuse, along with many other female abusers in boxing - none are exempt in my book from ATG lvl Mayweather to minor titlist done finally good at world level Joe Calzaghe) then I can understand that, but you need to judge him fairly based on today too.

Remember when you had the audacity to try and scold someone for calling fighters names before I bumped a thread where you referred to Calzaghe as “Cowardzaghe”?? Then you deleted that post but where too stupid to realize several people already quoted that same post of yours. Dumbass.

 

What is really dangerous here, is that he was taking those shots when he was already tired. That's why most corners throw in the towel when they see their fighter not fighting back late in a fight. Taking serious blows when tired is what can cause permanent damage.

 

Never liked the guy for ducking and some of his antics and was glad he lost, but never to hear he’s in this shape after. Sad to see this happen to anyone, hope he makes a full recovery for his life after boxing, which has to begin now.

There's a semantic difference between cessation of criminal activity and turning your life 'around' ie going in the opposite direction.

Not every boxer is an animal, but we've got quite a few that are admired and lauded for being so. A lot of boxers go into this profession because they are violent antisocial misfits who get off on hurting other people. It's also one of those professions where you don't get fired for pistol whipping and robbing a guy in a bowling alley parking lot.

I enjoy boxing, but those aren't the kind of boxers who I enjoy watching. And let's face facts, boxing as a sport is fairly shady, both as organized violence and the corrupt practices that are supposed to regulate the violence. While I enjoy it as entertainment, I do not believe that a boxer has the same social utility as a teacher or a policeman.
