Gomez vs Barrera @ 122

No, no chance for Barrera at all in this match up. Gomez stops MAB within 10 rounds...probably sooner than that. Gomez destroys Barrera.

 

MAB wins this...but man Gomez is the most overrated boxer on this site....he is actually considered as unbeatable as Duran at LW, Ali and SRR

I respect everything you say, but must disagree here. Gomez was tremendous at 122, and has all the tools needed to beat Barrera and then some.

Take Jones-Barrera as an example (specifically the first fight). Jones, as messy and awkward looking as he was, won that fight because of his ability to keep Barrera at the proper range, and not let him inside those long arms to break him down. He could bomb with that big right from where he needed to.

Conversely, Barrera had so much success against Morales because Morales either couldn't or wouldn't move out of the way after firing for the most part.

Gomez's feet would be the key here; until about 1981 he had the best feet in the game, and would create all sorts of angles Barrera would have difficulty with. He'd have more in his arsenal than the relatively one-dimensional Morales, who was lost because his right had been taken away by Barrera. He had great acumen with both hands and moved far better, and had every ounce of the battling spirit that kept Morales in the game in their trilogy.

 

I have Gomez #2 all-time Boricua and I have Barrera at around 6 or 7 on the Mexican list.

I’d pick Gomez in this MM.

 

I do appreciate Gómez IMO, and think he was great...but those who call him unbeatable at this weight I don’t see it.

I read through a Nelson Barerra thread where a majority picked MAB, due to his chin and counter punching, but it is a stretch to pick him over Gomez....Gomez KO’s MAB, while Nelson loses a decision.

I agree MAB is borderline top 10 Mexican fighter but did fall 8-10 range last time I did one and had Gomez 3-4 PR fighter.

I might pick Gomez to beat Morales but favor JMM, Pac and Barerra over him at this weight or FW.

I think Gomez is great but it baffles me why he has achieved Duran like unbeatable status as a SBW

 

I'd pick Nelson to beat Marco I think, but he had too much trouble with Laporte, Martinez and Villasana for me to be confident that he'd paste Barrera or beat him easily.

 

Gomez by KO , only question is in what round does Barrera fold
