Dwight was a Cruiser and Dokes offered no movement and not much defense. And Holyfield did not have the power to hurt the iron chinned Young. Prime Young had the tools to shut down Evander's offense. And Young was never stopped in his prime, save once against the murderous hitting Shavers. And he fought everybody. Evander might eke out a decision with his high work rate but NO WAY he stops prime Young.
Thank you joebeadg...that's right...and after dwelling on the result of this fight...Jimmy Young outboxes Holy all the way...it's just a matter of whether he'd get the decision.
its always a matter of if he gets the decision! LOL I read somewhere Evander saying how when he was coming up sparring with Jimmy. Was frustrated he couldn't hit him, then learned he had to keep throwing after missing the first few and then land some. Probably learned a lot from Jimmy. I think guys who throw a lot of punches are the most dangerous for Jimmy, though hard for me to ever pick against him, he's the man!
Jimmy Young fans make out he was robbed and deserved a clear-cut decision against Ken Norton but that fight was genuinely close and could go either way. Holyfield wouldn't look great against Young's style but he would work Young over more sharply and more effectively than Norton did, using similar arsenal with a bit more variety. Young might go the distance but Holyfield would be give him a proper beating in there. Holyfield was actually a better boxer than all of those guys Young beat or allegedly was robbed against. Far better than Foreman and Lyle and Shavers, better than Norton and far better than the 230 pound slob version of Muhammad Ali who at times seemed to scare Young into half-way exiting the ring.
l like Holyfield here, Jimmy was so slick smart & experienced from the school of hard knocks & coming up unguarded in gyms & fights, he was basically thrown in with the wolves and I felt he beat Ali and Norton he did beat,Lyle 2X and as we know Foreman. Young fell apart after the Norton loss and went downhill in his preparation after that fight walking into the ring with Man-Boobs. I think Young would offer problems for Holyfield with movement and trickyness but the aggression, power & determination of Evander would be the factor for the close decision win. Evander did fight on even terms with Ruiz and Young was better but Evander had his down career moments. I would not bet a lot of money on Evander but I think his greatness wins this for him with both men at their best but Jimmy was a bag of tricks & moves
very good point, even when Young & inexperienced thrown in with a upcoming Shavers & stopped, Young went on still inexperienced but improved getting off the floor to fight Shavers to a draw (many felt Young deserved this nod) Youngs victorys over Foreman,Shavers and Lyle 2X kind of makes a Baer victory a great bet
I'm a big Young fan but I don't think he was robbed vs. Norton. What I do think is that essentially the fight was even and he could have gotten a win or at least a draw.
