Trouble with a lot of this is that it's based on what you think Fury will do versus what Joshua has done. Joshua has done over a million PPV sales domestically in three of his last four fights, with combined sales of around 4.8m, generating almost £100m, and fighting in front of around 325,000 people. These are all quantifiable, demonstrable facts. 'Fury is becoming a major star in America.' Is he? His profile has been boosted without doubt, but lets see what happens next.
We have different ideas on what we deem success to be for a fighter. You equate success to how many ppv’s/how much money a fighter makes. I equate it to the legacy they create and leave behind. Legacy and popularity does not always convert into money...many of the people Fury reaches out to and inspires might never buy a ppv, or attend a fight.
I just think you're getting way ahead of yourself. Four months ago Tyson was getting booed out of the ring in his own country after another dull performance. One draw later and you're seriously comparing him to Ali. Let's see what happens next eh?
I knew you’d take the Ali comparison out of context. Well done. I’ll tell you what’s happened so far...he went to Germany and beat the man, got all the belts, pressed the self destruct button with his mental illness, boozed, did coke, got really very fat, spent nearly 3 years out the ring, came back, lost 10 stone, fought two puddings and then went to America and had a win rightfully pulled away from him. Joshua has much as I admire him, beat the man who won a vacant belt twice, and won the third ‘vacant’ belt against a fella who was 41, and hadn’t fought for 18 months. He’s world champion (and an excellent one) because someone released all the belts then lost the plot. None of that is made up.
I would of thought Frank will start pushing Tyson up the wbo rankings now. If he gets Tyson into a mand position they can force the AJ fight and the show will go to purse bids if an agreement can't be made with sky/bt. The coming year will be interesting because hearn/sky will be getting badgered to make the fury fight, by the British public. But they probably don't realise how hard it is to get Eddie and Frank to work with each other.
If you don't want people to point out your silly comparisons don't make them in the first place then hide behind the idea that you're being taken out of context. It's absolutely fine to say Tyson did well, came back from a heavy knockdown, deserved to win and boosted his profile without going down the faintly fanatical lines of 'he's going to be a PPV megastar and in some ways he's similar to Ali.'
Hahaha. It wasn’t a silly comparison, I made a viable point. I’ll put it as simple as I can for you....Fury’s popularity transcends boxing just as Ali’s popularity transcended boxing...their message or struggle had a different label but the point remains. Yes, Joshua is a big brand inside boxing and he draws in the casual audience with his brilliant knockouts and good looks...but there’s real no substance beyond that. Which is fine by me by the way, i’m only really bothered about what happens in the ring. However, I wanted to point it out in the first place because people like you put too much importance on ticket sales and ppv’s, who deserves what splits or whatever and you don’t think beyond that. Fury does bring a shed load to the table...
Frustrating how not only different promotional banners are a barrier to fights being made but now you've also got TV networks to deal with. It's utterly bonkers really. Hard work at times is boxing.
Just watched a bit of the IFL interview and he must have said AJ Whyte about 20 times. Also you cant tell me Adam Smith doesnt have people tied up in his basement. If i was to make a film about a creepy serial killer who likes to sniff then wear the knickers of his victims i would cast him immediately.
What evidence do you have that Fury 'transcends boxing?' By any measure you could possibly choose he's not as popular or well known as Joshua. I know it's obvious that you really want him to be this global megastar. I just want to know why you already think he is.
We both know that wasn’t cut and dry. He accepted a back dated ban so he could resume his boxing career.
