Prime Tike Myson was the greatest fighter ever. Gus Tomato dying destroyed his motivation and he no longer wanted to train. Then the gold digger Robin Givens & Don King got their hands on him and ruined him. Is this sentiment often shared on Quora, @mark ant ?
Half agree with you. Prime Mike Tyson had the potential to be the best ever, but threw it all away. Greatness is something proven over time with feats. The power, the handspeed, the bobbin' and weaving, the combos, the intimidation...This magnificent fighter was already starting to disappear by the time of the first Bruno fight. He existed for about four years, and existed at the top for about three. In the end, Tyson is a guy who lost to the best fighters he fought, because yes, you are correct, he did not care anymore.
You forgot the fact that he knocks Ali out in 1 round because he was such a machine of war in his prime
Tyson in his prime was the most skilled heavyweight I ever saw. He had it all: power, speed, defense, stamina and a solid chin. I put Tyson above every heavyweight champion in history in fantasy fights -- even against prime Ali. Just my opinion.
I tend to think these days that what Tyson actually achieved was pretty great, considering where he came from and the mental demons he had. Its a wonder he made it to a four year title reign really, he lost his mentor and most of the people he cared about. He was self destructive but this is probably what gave him the mentality he needed to be the fighter he was, he was a destructive force of nature and believed he was a god. Would a completely sane mind be able to cut though the division in the violent manner he did? He admitted to not wanting that stability or he wouldn't be "Iron Mike" anymore. I think his prime career would have been short whatever the case. The only thing that is really disappointing to me is the con he became after prison, because it really did tarnish his legacy. People can always use mental weakness against him, which is a big thing when you talk about the mental strength of other all time greats.

Have I never wrote a sentence on this forum about how great Ali`s chin was or how hard he was to hit?
No one goes more than one round with him in his prime. If his mentor never died he would have retired undefeated
Its too bad Cus died, then all that nonsense that happened around him and to him. Just because I'd like to have seen how his career would have played out. He was absolutely on fire for awhile there. When he started boxing guys that could fight though, I think it started to wear him down a little at a time. He couldn't have kept up that early killing machine energy up too long as he got a little older I don't think. I don't think much would be different had Cus lived really. When he fired Rooney is when I noticed the biggest decline actually
Fergy, I heard you got asked to play five-a-side football and turned up wearing combat trousers and loafers.
Yeah if Cus was around for say another 5 years, we might be looking at a fighter who'd break Marciano's AND Louis's records. Maybe not in 1990 but the glue might be a bit stronger for Team Tyson even though Jim Jacobs would still pass away in 1988. Interesting to see what scenario unfolds in that scenario...
