Classic rivalry. A couple of close, compelling (and controversial) clash of styles between two combatants.

Cool I was just thinking about rewatching these. Been out of town for a death in the family but should be able to chime in later in the week.

I think I had JMM winning 1 or a draw? And 2 I can’t remember if I scored before or not? But I seem to think I had JMM in both?

I have to admit never seeing any of these. I should, I suppose.

Sorry to hear of the death in the family, Philly.....

Watched 'em but never scored e'm.

Stayed up to watch the third fight which I remember feeling was a complete injustice as Marquez boxed rings round Pacquiao, so will try and watch that one too (might even watch the 4th!)

Fight 1 was great, fight 2 was tighter than a nat's ass. The knockdown was the difference in the second fight, I remember. Top quality fights though.

    I posted my cards recently.

Fight I - Marquez 114-111 or 9-3 in rounds. I gave the first two to Pacquaio and I believe the 10th round too. The 12th was a swing round so am happy with 113-112 Marquez also.

Fight II - I was at this fight (I went to 2, 3 & 4) and most felt Marquez deserved it. I scored it 115-112 or 8-4 in rounds but can see a case for 114-113 as I felt the first round was close enough to go either way.

PhillyPhan69, sorry to hear about the death in the family. Look forward to seeing your score for these fights.

I scored the first fightt. I scored 8-3-1 for JMM, giving MP only rounds 1 (4 point round), 2, 10, I had round 8 EVEN, and gave JMM rounds 3,4,5,6,7,9,11,12. My score was 114-112. A lot of the rounds were close and when one fighter (JMM) fights with such a textbook style, I might be guilty of giving "style" points.

I thought that JMM had a tough time adjusting to MP's speed and the southpaw punching early in the fight. After he adjusted, I thought that he won the "boxing" part of the fight. MP still landed some good left hands and his quickness was still there, but for the most part I thought JMM out boxed him. It was a tough fight to score and I'd have no problem with a score in MP's favor. MP had the speed and power and those two attributes are hard to overcome.

I'm pretty sure I had the first fight as either a draw or a one-point Pacquiao victory, and the second fight as a narrow Marquez win. I'm looking forward to rescoring these, but I I'm going to try to make it through the remaining fights-of-the-week from last week first.

Just watched the second fight. The video above is missing round 6, but other videos of this fight on Youtube have round 6. I watched round 6 on Azteca, then switched back and watched this video. I scored the fight for JMM 115-112, giving JMM rounds 1,2,5,6,7,8,9,12. I gave MP rounds 3 (2 points), 4,10,11. Like the first fight I thought JMM boxed better, but MP's boxing had improved since the first fight, and his punch and speed were still there. Again, many rounds were close and I would have no problem with someone who scored it for MP.

JMM seems to be a little bigger than MP and he has textbook skills. He keeps his feet under him, he keeps his hands up and his elbows in, but MP is a little quicker and left handed, his left is difficult for JMM to see at times. MP has speed and energy but he doesn't always keep his feet under him and he lunges at times. JMM went to the body well in one round and had some success but he didn't continue. Good fight.

Halfway through the first fight and I have Paquiao up 56-55. Gave him the first round (10-6) and the second.

Marquez is really lucky that the ref didn’t stop the fight when he went down for the third time in the first. Kind of interesting to think about how his career and the legacy of so many fighters in that era might have been different if Marquez loses this fight tko1.

Manny Steward is really doing a good job attending to the technical aspects of both fighters’ performances, for example by calling out Marquez for keeping his head on the center line and predicting that it would become a much easier fight for him once he started using more head movement. For someone considered an elite technician, Marquez often seemed too hittable.

Interesting to see how successful Pacquaio was despite being such a limited fighter at that stage in his career. A testament to his speed and power. Not sure what to make of all his side-to-side movement. Looks pretty but other than avoiding jabs (which Marquez wasn’t really throwing anyway) while he tries to close distance, I’m not sure how much of a role it played in this fight. Could be wrong but I’ve always suspected that the talk about Pacquiao’s “angles” overemphasizes their importance.

I feel the same way when I watch Alexis Arguello. He gets hit way more than he should.Does anyone agree?

    Ended up scoring Pacquaio-Marquez I a draw, 113-113.

    Gave Pacquiao 7 and 10
    Marquez 11 and 12
And I thought that 8 and 9 were even.

Marquez obviously outscored Pac after the 2nd round but I don’t think he was nearly as impressive in rounds 7-10 as he had been in 3-6. Very close fight that swung on a few very tight rounds.

    JMM vs Pac 1
So far I see it exactly the same as all 3 of you.

Rds 1-2 for Pac 3-6 for JMM
I do think 2-4 we very close rounds.

Through 6 rounds both corners seem to feel the same Márquez is taking control of the fight.

Marquez’s corner seems to keep telling him he won 2-6...I don’t know if they believed that? Or were just trying to coach him a certain way? I wouldn’t argue vehemently if some one gave JMM 2 but I really don’t see, and would even have a hard time seeing it even.

I could see 3-4 even but felt like Márquez did enough to take them. I would however question someone if they gave 3-4 to Pac...

Rounds 5 and 6 were clear Márquez rounds and can’t picture someone scoring them different.

    Good fight, good memory
