Alvarez > Ward, KOed the man with a referee doing is job. Came out of muddy waters to surprise a cruising puncher who did not know how to behave when stunned, because it had never hapenned to him before. Not the same feeling as being ball shocked.
John David Jackson told us exactly what happened a year ago: https://www.badlefthook.com/2017/9/...jackson-details-split-lambasts-sergey-kovalev I knew that we could have won the rematch but Sergey started making money, getting big headed and he didn’t want to train hard anymore. Every camp was worse and worse. I was doing some body work on Sergey, I made him fold up. I’m 54 years old and he couldn't take it. I told Don, if Ward can get inside, withstand his early shots then he (Sergey) is in trouble and that is what happened, he proved me right. Sergey likes to talk trash. He said a couple of things. He's blaming me for the loss but let me tell you this, you can’t blame me for your loss when you quit. He quit! He makes Russian people look bad, all the Russians that I’ve trained, they are wonderful people man. They would give you the shirt of their back. This guy (Kovalev), is a complete dick. He wants everything for himself. Kovalev was always an excellent technician, boxer, and power puncher. He was that way before Ward, during the Ward fights, and this Saturday. He would have won the first Ward fight had the judges scored it right. Then he got lazy and stopped working on stamina training. He actually did well against Ward in the first few rounds of the second fight. Then he ran out of gas and Ward put him away (was technically a low blow, but it was obvious the fight had turned and was heading in Ward's direction). Then he fired JDJ and got a no-name "trainer" that let him do whatever he wanted, which was everything but stamina training apparently. He crushed a couple of tomato cans because of his completely superior skills, but then he faced another elite fighter (Alvarez), again winning the first few rounds and then running out of steam and getting clocked and knocked out. Obviously he didn't learn his lesson after the second Ward fight. Maybe he was telling himself he lost due to a low blow. Maybe that was technically correct. He better learn after this experience, because if he doesn't, he'll never be an elite competitor again.
What does being dropped while there is a woman ref have to do with Kov being overrated? I believe Darnell Boone did that. Boone can bang and dropped very good fighters in his time. So I'm gonna say no! Kov was not overrated.
Geeze. Tough crowd around here based on the thread titles I'm seeing. No, Kovalev was most certainly not overrated. He's an elite talent, even still in my eyes. Alvarez is the goods. No shame in losing this fight, especially with the type of action this one had.
Sorry but Jackson is $%#^. He may speak truth but for many fans and for me what he did to Kovalev was beyond understanding even taking into consideration Kovalev being #$%@. He is a trainer and he should have found the way to deliver his vision to a fighter. He is a trainer, teammate and he should have never acted the way he did.
Sure, but it's ultimately up to the fighter to make the right decision regarding his preparation. Krusher's choice in trainers suggests he wants someone who agrees with whatever he says (and doesn't charge a lot of $) instead of someone who gives him the correct, needed criticism and advice.
Kovalev is going to lose the rematch! He was never on the level of GGG, Usyk, Lomachenko. Beterbiev, Gvozdyk and Bivol beat him! Povetkin is P4P better too.
Depends on how u originally viewed him. He beat Ward convincingly first time round & it looked like he was winning the second narrowly til he got stopped... That in itself shows you how good he is. Box rec can be misleading to those who don't have a brain to dig deeper... Yes Bhop was old but considering Pascal, Cloud etc couldn't beat him it was still a decent win. Kovalev Twice handled Pascal who was a former lineal champion. Chilemba, Cleverly etc if he overturns the Alvarez result then that is a brilliant career & LHW legacy... Here's what his resume will essentially be to any objective poster: -1-1 with Ward -1-1 Alvarez. -2x Pascal -Bhop -Cleverly -Chilemba Etc Very good career. Skilful, athletic seek & destroy boxer puncher, maybe chinny & out of the ring can be his own worst enemy but overall he's been a fantastic champion of our era in the the mould of say maybe a Sergio Martinez in some ways. He might not be done yet! Looks in a good place mentally right now.. Another loss would end his career tho & would hurt his overall standing. We'll see..
No but his training habits caught up with him somewhat. He is also not mentally the strongest. Ward broke him and he hasn't been able to come back from it. But at his peak he was just as good as he looked imo.
