Loma is still too small for 135, the Pedraza fight highlighted this again

Loma is chasing for too much glory. He is facing guys at 135 who are very mobile and MUCH more taller and bigger than him. It's like when cruiserweights move up to HW and have to face Joshua, Fury, or Wilder.

It's not only about height, his frame is small. He's facing way too many disadvantages in his 135 fights. Unlike Floyd/Pac, he isn't on the juice either.

And Pedraza is not a lightweight, he moved up from 130. Imagine a true lightweight, I'm telling you this if Loma got into the ring with Easter or Flanagan the size advantage would be comical.

I heard a few people question whether Pedraza was bigger than Loma or not. He's obviously bigger than him and with that large frame, very long reach and wide shoulders of his much better suited to 135 than Loma is.

Loma turned pro at 126 and weighed 129 in the ring for his pro debut whereas, conversely, Pedraza turned pro at 132

Technically Pedraza has only actually fought at super-featherweight for 9 of his 27 fights and his fight against Loma on Saturday was his 18th above the super-feather limit whereas Loma has only fought above the super-featherweight limit twice. Even if Pedraza only weighed 1 or 2lbs above the SFW limit technically they're lightweight fights. Crawford, who was a gigantic 135 pounder, technically only fought at 135 for 6 of 25 fights before officially moving up to 140.

A member of Pedraza's team said that they might even move up to 140 soon and Pedraza, who'd been inactive for 9 months going into the fight against Twink whereas his fight against Loma was his 4th in under 9 months (''inactivity, doe'' lol) was adamant during the build up to the fight against Twink that ''win or lose'' he was going to move up to 135 immediately afterwards, so even if he won that fight he was going to relinquish his world title and move up to 135 which he describes as his ''natural weight.''

“My lack of activity and struggling to make weight at 130lbs definitely affected my performance in my last fight,” says Pedraza, “but I am working hard and looking forward to coming back soon. I think the Lightweight division is where I will make my mark and am excited to get back in the ring.”

    Loma's optimal weight is 130.

He doesn't have the frame to be at 100% effective beyond that weight.

I tend to agree with OP. The size difference is marked and obvious. He's small for 135. I don't think he could make 140 and be as successful against the top guys as he is now.

yes, it is obvious. although, his fans want to point to his size to explain anything outside of spectacular, but brush the same evidence aside when someone tells them mikey would wreck loma. Truth is, loma is a very good boxer with an individual style that is hard to deal with if you cant match him in power and workrate.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but at 135, loma is very beatable in the elite ranks. I also believe his natural weight is 130, but need to see him vs the best natural feathers before ranking him historically in comparison with those before him.
we need to realize that loma is not going to get any better, he is physically maxed out, any improvement will come from his increased understanding of high level strategy. but, his opponents are better preparing to deal with what loma throws at them now. nobody is going to plant their feet against him anymore and just let him whirlwind around them, they are going to make him work for what came easy before.
loma hit pedraza with 42 power shots when pedraza wasnt even throwing anything back, what other lightweight could pedraza take 42 continuous punches from without dropping?

Loma is better than all the guys at 135 to 140, so it doesn't really matter if they are bigger. Besides Mikey at 135 I don't see Loma being tested again until he reaches 147, since he completely toyed with Pedraza. I didn't give Pedraza one round.

Excellent post although the hater backlash is almost inevitable. I know you respect and admire Loma’s skill yet the acknowledgement will be offset by the constructive critique. Sad but very true.

I think Loma’s biggest barrier to moving up in weight is his lack of power, in addition to his size. Mayweather had the height and reach to move up more and he had more power than Loma. Pac was always a big puncher and that allowed him to move into higher divisions, but he hit his limit at 147. His power, while good, was not good enough to get him a KO for years.

Loma lack size AND power. He landed a lot of power shots on both Linares & Padraza and didn’t affect them that much until the later rounds. These bigger guys can take a lot more punishment and that forced Loma to be more active and defensively responsible at the same time.

It’s the reach man, if I could change anything in boxing I’d give loma an extra 2/3” reach.
T-rex arms are his only weakness.
The man moves like a martial artist; he spent years dancing honnestly I can’t belive he’s never studied karate, the movement is so similar it blows my mind.

I don't really want to hear about size. Lomachenko fans say he'd beat Pacquiao/JMM/Morales/Barrera. A guy that special would have no problem overcoming size and power disadvantages... like what Pacquiao has done!
