Does trash talk and brawls really sell tickets?

I always saw it as a sign of weakness myself.

    NO!!!

it reflects the level of low minded thinking, thug minded insult driven 'owned' base parroting Lad existence that sooooo many people think is great and how we get one over or 'win' over someone or are somehow superior to that person or those people.

in other words Stupid and at times disgusting behaviour... equally from those that support it, enjoy it or promote it.

    You're missing my point.

I was referring to the way Turpin and Robinson treated each other as an example of how fighters could and should behave.

As much as I like Basilio, his whole resentment towards Robinson was because (and, remember, this is Basilio's version of the story) Robinson didn't acknowledge him when Basilio went to introduce himself. I'm not saying that this isn't rude but no one knows what the circumstances were, no one knows if it's even true and even if it did happen, Basilio resenting Robinson for this for years afterwards seems a massive over-reaction.

I don't know of any examples where Robinson was an incredible jerk towards his opponents but I'd be interested to hear some if anyone can provide them.

You mean like after he killed Jimmy Doyle in a welterweight title fight, and there was an inquest into the death, and the District Attorney asked Robinson when he thought he had Doyle in trouble, and Robinson said "When he signed the contract."

If Deontay Wilder had killed Tyson Fury with that punch in the 12th and someone asked Wilder afterward when he knew he had Fury in trouble and Wilder said "when he signed the contract" ... think anyone would find that crass or rude or an example of Wilder being a total jerk to a guy who died?

Give me a break. Robinson had one of the biggest egos in boxing history. Don't try to paint him as some freaking gentlemanly saint.

Trash talking a dead opponent is about as low as it gets.

You're being selective with your quotes there.

Robinson is supposed to have said "When he signed the contract. It's my business to have him in trouble."

That changes the meaning of what he said and is a pretty accurate statement about the nature of boxing.

You're also missing my point. And it's obvious that I was not trying to paint him as 'some freaking gentlemanly saint'.

So I'll say it again, I was referring to the way Turpin and Robinson treated each other as an example of how fighters could and should behave.

I prefer they be mean to each other, instead of going home and shooting their babies in the skull while they are laying in their crib.

You need to drop your Turpin deal, seriously.

That's like starting a thread with why can't more NFL players be like O.J.?

Or why can't more pro wrestlers by like Chris Benoit?

Turpin was severely depressed. I don't know if you heard this but he committed suicide.

People tend to do that either when they're unable to think rationally or are in a state of total despair.

He had issues, there's no doubt about that. Judging by your posts I'm surprised you don't relate to him a bit more.

    Oh, I heard.

Chris Benoit was depressed, too. So was O.J.

But starting threads wondering why people can't be more like the boxers who tried to murder their infant daughter is laughable ... I don't know if you heard that before or not.

And, no, I don't "relate" to people who shoot a baby in the head. But apparently you do.

This board has gone to hell, in all honesty.

This thread has anyway and it went that way as soon as you contributed to it by going off-topic, making selective quotes and looking for an argument.

I suppose you could say it's 'mission accomplished' for you. So if you think this board has gone to hell then perhaps you should find another and start stirring things there.

Of course it sells. Even if you have two crap fighters you didn't want to see... add a little fight at the press conference... and some people will make the impulse buy.

I almost mentioned Fedor myself. Like when Randallman slammed him right on his head and rather than instantly becoming a sessile vegetable he basically just yawned and said, "Veddy good. I vin now".
His brother Alexander's very short fight with Primo Carnera physique-clone James Thompson is also a sterling example of this insouciant attitude.
