I’d be shocked if any of my coworkers/friends knew him. I’ve never heard them mention boxing. People know Mayweather and Pacquiao. That’s it.
The thing is this: Even if AJ beat Wilder in Las Vegas, no one will know AJ in the US because Wilder is not a draw. Compare that to Lennox Lewis who beat a faded Tyson and became well-known even to fringe boxing fans in the US.
Wilder is becoming huge here in the US. He’s on every major sports network/ media outlets here. #FACTS did great PPV numbers as well.
Clearly you've been reading the scurrilous reports that standards have dropped in the UK. Think again. The ginger patrol would be on to him in a flash. He'd be in the stocks at Tower bridge before you know it with the rest of them.
300K PPV for and American Heavyweight in the US in pretty bad in truth the break-even point 250K so he done 50K profit that is terrible in any business that is small grow you really need to be doubling to being doing well . It's pretty sad that boxing has shrunk and the numbers are no way near compared to something like the 70s or 80s or even the 90s in the US alone. Wonder why AJ sticks to 100K live audience?, to be honest if I was a boxer right now I'd stick to the UK. a dedicated audience that will turn out for you. It's too risky to venture outside nowadays even the US is now second rate in terms of views and stadiums. It must be frustrating for American Boxing fans and I thought of hoped that Wilder Fury would bring it back to at least something like 15 million views.
300K is pretty good when you consider it as the first HW PPV in 12 years. Its still more than Mike Tyson against McBride in 2005. And way better than the abysmal 60k for Rahman vs Maskev in 2006. You have to go back to 2003 to see better numbers when Jones fought Ruiz.
Setting the bar against against a shot Mike Tyson vs Mcbride and Rahman vs Makev is extremely low. Remember this forum was calling it the biggest fight of the year. A mega event etc etc. 300K buys on their first PPV is what should be expected. Not great, not a disaster just par for course.
I doubt he cares that much if he's unknown in US. He's got 3 of the four belts, wodgers of cash, a big uk following and a six pack.
anyone thought maybe joshua wanted a pic by himself for his instagram/facebook just a thought its been known. there may have been 100 Americans behind the camera, who knows?
His Joe Rogan also has very high numbers already and it's not been out a week yet. Careful mate or you'll invoke the ire of the UK AJ cheerleaders, of which there is a suspiciously fanatical band on here.
325K buys - the biggest HW bout in the US since 2003. Its more great than it is bad. That number also doesn't account for console buys , cinema buys and the UK PPV which i assume sold pretty well.
He's not known at all in the US. I can name at least 15 fighters that aren't even blips on the world stage that are more "known" than Joshua in the US. I think Joshua is a huge, star............in his backyard. Even some other places in the world (mainly European markets). No one knows him in the US. It's mainly because the US doesn't care all that much about boxing. Europe/ the UK etc..... are far more supportive of their boxers than we are of ours. To say that a British boxer is popular and well known in the US (when even our own boxers aren't supported or known) is foolish.
