Simply outclassed. I was disappointed with Rocky fielding but knew what was going to happen. He needed to use a hard jab at least keep out of range and grab hold of him. Make it ugly but saying all that he would have lasted a few more rounds and not got played any extra.
It’s all about levels, and I have no problem with fighters smiling their way through getting their backside handed to them. It doesn’t mean he’s just happy to be there to just sell the belt, there’s a few different reasons why such as trying to show that they haven’t hurt you badly...we all did this as kids (and adults). There’s also the shock of getting hurt and feeling embarrassed about it. It’s putting on a brave face but also sticking two fingers up to adversity. To say he doesn’t care though is ridiculous. He was out of his depth but he gave it 100%. Canelo is an elite level, all time great and we all know he has incredible durability with it. Fielding was not only inferior, he was a bigger target for him to land on. Those body shots was beautiful. Fielding can hold his head up high. It was an opportunity of a life time for a fighter of his level against an elite opponent in an amazing venue. He’s earned some decent money, too. Good lad.
Good on him he gave it s go. Thought he might have been a bit more competitive but he’s nuts if he turns down an opportunity like that. No one would.
Well said 20.just to add Fielding just simply is not good enough to implement fancy "tactics" at Canelos level. His only hope was to keep it simple and hope to be too strong in close.. . ...there is no point blaming Jamie Moore as some are doing. Idiots. The one point I would make is maybe just maybe you could argue Jamie should have not left Carl at all at this critical time in his prep for warrington. (I hope team Carl are right that he is soon superior to Josh that he can do without his trainer like this and still beat him anyway . ... )
It's funny how Rocky Fielding is being given a pass for being outclassed because of "his level" when actually he was officially a WORLD CHAMPION and defending against a man who was coming up from a lesser weight class. I'm not knocking Fielding, just pointing out how meaningless being a world champion has become, when a guy who's "world champion" at 168 is thought to be "stepping up" against a guy from the lighter divisions.
Related point I noticed recently. If you place a bet with a bookmaker on X to become a world champion, the small print will clarify what it means by 'world champion.' I found it interesting to spot that it meant WBC, WBA Super, IBF or WBO. Indeed, it actually stated 'WBA Regular and interim titles don't count.'
I'm actually laughing , at least I'm prepared to give an opinion. Thought he would do better haven't watched the fight yet though, just read about the rehydration clause wasn't aware of that beforehand.
Yeh but holding a belt doesn't mean that much in reality.... it's who you fight to get it. Charles Martin was a world champion...
My problem is how can you call yourself rocky when you have absolutely no punch resistance, people usually get the name rocky because they are tough. Just use your proper name in future Michael.
Just watched the fight. I don't think he was smiling intentionally, I understand your anger but to me it was natural. During the fight reality kicked in very early for Fielding, however he did well getting up from the first body shot. That zapped the life out of him which resulted in his own punches being feeble and almost arm like. Not to mention the following shots he received. Again though it was overall a disappointing night. There are levels to boxing, simple as that.
It says a lot about the state of boxing when there's clearly such a massive gap in skill between two fighters. They aren't even on the same planet in terms of ability. We're the pillocks who still tune in for a total mismatch though. Should have just left the tv off and slept a while longer.
Chances are, nearly all fighters who step in the ring with the likes of Canelo, Lomachenko, Inoue, Crawford, Usyk etc are going to be well out of their depth. All 5 above jabs stepped up in weight divisions and are still stopping fighters.
