Sonny Liston is another one of these old time fighters that casuals love to hype up. Liston beat 170 pound Patterson who was afraid of him and and slow as molasses Cleveland Williams. That is pretty much the best fighters Liston beat. Despite the casuals who love to act like Liston was a better fighter than Foreman this isn't close to being the case. Foreman fought the better, bigger opponents and was still able to fight and win at 48. While Liston was being knocked out by 199 pound guys like Leotis Martin when he was 40 or so. Liston could be out boxed. No fighter in his prime out boxed Foreman, Ali laid on the ropes and got lucky and don't say Jimmy Young either. Marty Marshall a 180 pound fighter with a worse record than King Roman out box and beat Liston in their 1st fight and managed to go the full 10 in their second fight. Roman if he fought smart could do the same thing.
" I'd rather be a lamp post in Denver than the Mayor of Philadelphia" Sonny was kinda sharp with his wit. Not educated but far from unitelligent.
No it is called me having a fully functioning brain. Patterson weighed as low as 163 in his career. He was a natural 180 pound guy who couldn't take a punch. So because Liston beat a natural 180 pound guy that means he is some all time great? Only in the eyes of casual boxing fans. But to people who know like I do, Liston is nothing special. Just some boxer casual boxing fans who believe whatever clueless boxing "historians" like Bert Sugar tells them.
Liston dominated the heavyweight division in his prime in a way not seen again until Mike Tyson. Patterson, when he turned pro was 17. Some people, especially men, are still growing at that age. By the time he was 25, he was regularly weighing 190+ pounds. Not only that, he beat some pretty tough and legit heavyweights like Bonavena and Chicago. Not ATG's by any means, but would be around Berbick or Weaver level heavies. Also, the guys Liston beat in the late 50s, they may not have been as big as your modern day heavyweight, but easily more skilled than your average modern day heavyweight. You mean to tell me that Eddie Machen would have no chance vs John Ruiz? Or Zora Folley or Cleveland Williams would have no chance vs Chris Arreola?
Cute I didn't ask you if Liston dominated a weak era filled with 180 pound heavyweights. I told you a fact and that fact is he fought small heavyweights. The first time Patterson weighed 195 was for the 3rd Ingo fight. The first 1 he weighed 182. He decided to put on weight once he started losing. Cleveland Williams is skilled? Yeah it is about time you get put on that ignored list. I can tolerate being a buffoon but only up to a certain level. Calling somebody who is unskilled as Williams skilled is just too much. A in shape Arreola would destroy Williams. Also typing Patterson beat somebody named Chicago? I never heard of any boxer who last name was Chicago and Oscar Bonavena had no skills. So my point still stands. Liston's best 2 wins were over glass chin 180 pound Patterson and slow as molasses Cleveland Williams. Beating those 2 guys doesn't equate to greatness. Bye bye now.
The guys Ali and Holmes beat were also tiny by todays standards. If size is an issue for Liston it is also a problem for those guys.
I meant Chuvalo.... must have been my phone's auto correct. Yeah.... Arreola was just so obviously better than Cleveland Williams lol
