There is no way someone has got as well in at the BBC as he has without being a nonce.

Second of all Tyson came back off the canvas to draw. He’s only beat Seferi and Pianetta this year. That’s not enough to win an award.

He deserves credit/awards for his non sporting achievements. Getting clean, weight loss, battling his demons, coming back to the very top level of the sport but not quite top sportsman of the year. Not that I think a cyclist should have won it either!

A fair point but I think he deserved to be nominated - not necessarily win.

His sporting achievements don’t warrant a sporting award. A win against Pianetta and Seferi and a draw against Wilder, no title wins. A special achievement award yeah why not, top sportsman? No.

Yep and I agree if you’re basing it purely on sporting achievement. Feel he did enough to be in the top 6 who were nominated though.

Based on achievements alone, and leaving any other considerations to one side, Froome is more deserving this year than Thomas, never mind previous years.

Simon Yates had a better overall year than Thomas as well.

All that said, SPOTY is part political, part populist. Merit is a fair bit down the pecking order.

Couldn't agree more: the ideology of 'equality of outcome' rather than 'equality of opportunity' is destructive and, despite the rhetoric, divisive too. Identity politics is the ultimate iron fist inside a velvet glove...

The BBC were never going to tolerate Fury the moment he spoke against pedos. I'm surprised they acknowledged him at all.

I had no problem with Harry Kane being nominated. He scored the winner past Croatia last game. He won the golden boot at the world cup. However i think the award is rubbish and have thought that way since giggs and the woman who won it by some sport on a horse.

For a sprinter to win a Commonwealth games gold, is the boxing equivalent of winning a European title. Its the football equivalent of being top goalscorer in the English championship or winning the league cup.

Do Boxers winning European titles get nominated high up in the SPOTY? Do the golden boot winners in the championship get high up in SPOTY?

Boxing is also objectively a FAR bigger sport than track and field.

Big sports in the UK are Football, Rugby, Cricket, Motorsports, golf, tennis and boxing. Everything else is minor.

A ridiculous beanfeast for the BBC darlings, at licence payer's expense. Pointless as well comparing different activities with one another for a "personality" trophy. Apart from Tyson's interview with the BBC's boxing expert !, I saw the rest at +30 speed on my player. Given the token 3 fight clips of boxing coverage, I would have preferred Tyson to have avoided it. However we all appreciate his PR move, eliciting an approving nod from the saintly Ms Ennis in the front row. Hope Josh enjoyed his evening elsewhere, he made the right decision.

That's fair enough, but winning the Tour is huge and I'm no cycling fan. The fella's done it 4 times.

Well I beg to differ that Athletics isn’t as big as Union Golf or Motorsports

Secondly I disagree that the Commonwealth Games is the equivalent of the Championships top scorer etc...
A third of the Worlds population has an interest in the Commonwealth Games, it’s the 2nd largest Multi Sport event in the world calendar.

Again, you fail to recognise the significance of an English athlete finishing the year as the fastest woman in the world over 100m & 200m, That has never happened before, it’s rarer than a British tennis pro winning a Grand Slam or Wimbledon which was enough for Murray to win SPOTY. Asher Smith certainly deserves her nomination.
