What's the final verdict on why Curry lost to Honeyghan? Was it: A. A case of Curry being dead at 147, and the weight issues finally catching up to him? B. A case of Honeyghan being the wrong style for him, and having his number? C. A case of Curry simply being overrated? D. A combination of A & B? E. A combination of A, B, and C?
I'd like to think it was a combination of Curry having trouble with the weight and also being too overconfident in himself and looking past Honeyghan. There was talks of a potential match with Hagler one time. It would have been nice to see a rematch between the 2, on Curry's best night I think he could have beaten Honeyghan.
A&B. History showed that Honeyghan wasn't a long-term proposition, and Curry certainly stands out as the better career fighter.
I say this as a Curry fan, but it's difficult for me to believe it was 100% because of weight/overconfidence. Curry actually looked pretty sharp in there early on. It was only after Honeyghan hurt him that Curry seemed to come completely undone. And that part, as a Curry fan, is troubling. I know Curry-Honeyghan always gets compared to Tyson-Douglas, but I don't think it's the same. It's well documented that Mike wasn't training hard for Douglas, and the writing was on the wall after he got dropped in sparring. Tyson looked flat from the opening bell. But I dunno if that was the case with Curry.
Mostly A Honeyghan proved to really not be exceptional in any way before or in his subsequent outings. Curry was fighting at 154 lbs. in 1985 and looked perfectly right at that weight. He did fight Rodriguez at 147 earlier in '86 but he was such an abysmal WBA political top 10 choice, ie. he couldn't fight - that Curry, even with weight problems, had no trouble with him.
The Rosi and Hatcher fights hints that may not be true... I am not for one second suggesting I was picking Lloyd to beat The Cobra, but with hindsight going to Italy and steamrolling the future multiple world title holder, shows Honeyghan was not going to be fazed by being the cannon fodder brought in to be hammered by the home fighter. And some were suggesting Hatcher would be awkward for Honeyghan, and to be fair he did kind of all fall awkward 40 seconds in...
Lloyd Honeyghan was better than Donald Curry. That's all. Donald Curry wasn't the second coming of Sugar Ray Leonard. Milton McCrory wasn't the second coming of Thomas Hearns. Colin Jones wasn't even the second coming of Dave "Boy" Green. Donald Curry was a good welterweight champ in an era of good welterweights. Just like Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter are good champs. But none of them are Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquaio. The Curry hype lasted so long he got into the Hall of Fame. But he was really nothing special. Really. And another 'good' champ in Honeyghan beat him. Straight up.
Look at Curry 's face at the start of the bout- cheeks all sunken in. Gorman who was Currys first manager was a no nonsense kinda of guy .Told it how it was . He even admitted that Curry had to drop way tooo much weight to stay at welter and this actually caused friction between Curry and Gorman. Years latter after Lloyd had lost his title he was offered a fight with Curry at jr.middle. He TURNED it down.
Was that before or after Curry lost to Rene Jacquot? Curry lost to Honeyghan. Honeyghan lost to Starling. Starling lost to Bumphus. Bumphus lost to Honeyghan. Breland beats Honeyghan. Starling beats Breland. They were all basically the same. Just like Thurman, Porter, Garcia, etc. None of them were really any better than the others. Flip a coin as to who beats who on any given night. Does Curry beat Breland when Breland was a welterweight champ twice and Curry was winning and losing at super welter? Flip a coin. Does the Curry who lost to Nunn beat the Starling who basically drew with Nunn the same year? Flip a coin. Starling couldn't beat Bumphus or Curry, but he destroys Honeghan (who destroyed Bumphus and Curry). None of them stood out from the others. Honeghan beat Curry straight up. Starling beat Honeghan straight up. Curry beat Starling straight up. None of them was a MASTER over all the others.
Honeyghan had that one night. Curry beat the guy that kicked Honeyghan's azz twice, if you remember. Not mention McCrory and Colin Jones.
McCrory and Colin Jones were just good welterweights. Nothing more. That's the whole point. Who the hell did Colin Jones ever beat? He was the Jimmy Ellis to Dave "Boy" Green's Ali. Danny Garcia has beaten better fighters than both. Is Keith Thurman some monster talent because he has wins over BOTH Garcia and Porter? They're just good welters. All of them. Curry is no different.
