I took ass whoopings on the street when I was a kid. I never ran away because I was smaller or had a boo boo on my hand. And I never talked mad **** either.

To give a bit of context, Rigo (well, however is in charge of his Social Media) introduced #notafraid hashtag before the fight and he was repeating all over again how he wasn't going to quit... Only to create one of the most epic NoMas stories in the boxing history.

Maybe you could say Rigo acted weak in the boxing ring, but I doubt he is a mentally weak person - he just has larger priorities than professional boxing glory. He escaped Cuba, smuggled out on a speedboat by Mexican gangsters, was held hostage with threat of execution until his promoter paid up. His gold teeth are all that remains of his two Olympic gold medals. By all accounts he is an unhappy, conflicted person - wife and kids left in Cuba, but a new life in the USA. After earning $20 a month in Cuba whilst and after becoming one of the greatest amateur boxers ever , he perhaps feels justified in not having his remaining health beaten out him in lost causes.

interesting old article here, Brin-Jonathan Butler, who wrote a good book about Cuban boxing and was paying attention to Rigo well before most.

Dude goes through the defection process and then gets into the ring and cant even take an ass whooping like a man.

I mean come on dude. Its just a beatdown. It's not the worst thing that could happen.

I've gotten my ass kicked a couple times. And I'm not even paid to get punched.

Mental illness should not be equated with mental weakness.

To be fair, it's a completely different situation.
You can't claim that fighting on the world stage as a boxer is the same as a street fight.

And Rigo has had plenty of though fights where he had to show heart, and in which he did. He even traded with Donaire.
Rigo just couldn't deal with the immense pressure.

I'm not talking about his poor performance. I'm talking about how he held and quit to avoid getting a beatdown.

Quitting during the first round is mental weakness though.

Nah, not at all. I laugh at fools like you that feel they can come on public site, critisize a gold medalist and pro belt holder without any success on any level in boxing themselves. Honestly, you could not do any better than Rigo, even if your daddy put gloves on you at birth. But go ahead, keep trash talking a guy that has accomplished more in boxing than you. Just remember, cream isn't the only thing that rises to the top, sh!t does too! You're a smart guy, guess which I think you are. LOL

I think it's bogus to let one night overshadow an exceptional amateur and pro career.

He quit against Loma. So what? He also was an ATG amateur and P4P pro who ducked by the other top names. Donaire at least had the guts to step up and got schooled for his efforts.
