I'm referring to his 2011 NC with Sherman Williams, where Evander basically wanted out after 3 rounds - claiming that he couldn't go on, due to the tiniest cut I have ever seen cause a fight to be stopped!
It happens to lots of fighters who fight on too long. JCC losing to Grover Wiley was just painful to watch.
Michael Nunn losing his Super Middleweight title to total journeyman Steve Little. At that point, Nunn's only loss was late TKO loss to James Toney - in a fight where Nunn was way ahead. For Nunn-Little, Nigel Benn shared the card. It was supposed to set up a big unification between the two. Not only did Nunn have to get off the floor against Little, he was outboxed. The loss was so bad, it's basically kept Michael Nunn out of the Hall of Fame and led people to completely ignore his career. And he had a wonderful career. But that loss was about as thorough and bad as it gets for a guy who was a reigning champ and also considered GREAT! He wasn't considered either after that.
Holyfield was like 48 or 49 YEARS OLD. It's not like he was 29. It's no different than Duran and Whitaker BOTH quitting after getting punched in the armpit against Pat Lawlor and Carlos Bojorquez, respectively. And neither of them were 48 at the time.
I don't think Schmeling ,Willard, or Patterson had anything to be embarrassed about.I haven't seen Dempsey v Fulton so I won't comment on that
Patterson was made a *****, Liston made Patterson's heavyweight ranking drop significantly. You may be right about Schmeling. And in the same way, Walcott's first round KO loss wouldnt be shameful, but losing to anyone by first round KO, even destructive punchers like Louis and Marciano, is shameful in my eyes. Willard's pulvarization at the hands of Dempsey dropped his stock incredibly. Before that, he had never been down in his entire career. If Dempsey had never shown up, Willard would be remembered for having a granite chin. Now all he's remembered for is being Dempsey's stair to the championship. Fulton was the 2-1 favorite against Dempsey, coming off of a win against Sam Langford, who predicted that he'd be the next champion. Dempsey knocked him out in less than 20 seconds of the first round.
He was never as good at 168 as 160 Still, even with that loss he had done enough up to that point to deserve HOF status, in my opinion.
Morrison -Bent Hopkins - Smith Holmes- Tyson Tyson- McBride & Williams Mercer-Fuerguson Lenox-McCall-Rahman Rahman-Oleg X2 Oleg-Kirk Johnson KirkJohnson -Vitali Vitali-Bryd
Byrd was a good defensive fighter, also out of curiosity where were Rahman and McCall rated by the ring magazine in each of the respective years that they beat Lewis?
That loss was pathetic, Nunn did nothing and got booed out of the ring by the British public, who thought he was a big shot from America who was going to challenge Eubank, I think the fight mighht have been on the undercard of Benn v Eubank 2 which was viewed by 15 million people in Britain.
Only thing you ever here about Dempsey and Louis in them one round KO`s is how awesome they were and what an iconic moment it was, both punchers had quick hands, Liston was slower, and neither Schmeling or Willard ever got referred to as dears trapped in the headlights the way Paterson was reffered to by scribes after they witnessed the fear in Floyd`s face during both of those losses, and that`s another thing who got KO`d twice in one round by the same man, that didn`t happen to Max or Jess and Schmeling had beaten Louis brilliantly in the first match. In fact has any world champ ever been knocked out in one round by the same guy twice? Could you imagine if that happened to AJ or Wilder if they ever meet twice!
