He passed yesterday. Manager and trainer of McGirt, Hamsho and many others. Matchmaker, promoter, all around boxing guy, and, apparently, a top notch tailor too.
There are some good stories online about his tailoring business and him. Did he start or have something to do with some of the first computerized boxing record keeping?
He did a great job with Mustafa Hamsho and Buddy McGirt. He seemed to be a pretty shrewd manager. I heard rumors he had underworld connections, but that probably only gave him the ba%%s and brains to work with the corrupt WBA and WBC.
I was wrong, it was Ralph Citro who did the record keeping. He and Al Certo were about the same age and were from N.J. I got them mixed up!
I think so, but if he pulled out, maybe he'd lose the big payday and, in all honesty, he couldn't beat Whitaker with two good arms, as shown in their second fight. And, maybe using the excuse of the shoulder helped get the rematch and another big payday.
He fought both fights with a bad shoulder, had fought for some time with it. At that point it wasn't going to be fixed. Buddy was a professional fighter and those were big paydays so he adapted- which he was able to do because he was a well schooled professional.
