I agree. While I was not rooting for MAB I did pick him and was pulling for him. I thought JMM won clean, not sure if controversy is a new narrative or revisionism? I don’t recall many up in arms about it at the time? But I could be wrong
The controversy was over the cards being so wide for Marquez in what was and is generally considered a close fight, as well as the KD that wasn't given to Barrera; compounded further still by Barrera being deducted a point for hitting Marquez, when he was down.
Hi kev. The first two Winstone-Saldivar fights are on the tube, they're classic boxer vs pressure fighter examples. His fights with Guerrero and Baby Luis both showcase his skill too. Legra vs Famechon is an excellent close fight, the same for Legra-Saldivar, Legra-Jofre and Famechon-Saldivar. Legra's title-winning effort against the faded version of Winstone is dominant and impressive. Also, Famechon makes his mark much more clearly in the rematch against Harada after being swarmed and bullied in their first fight. There's plenty of this on YouTube to begin with.
Too bad there’s no tape known to exist on Winstone-Legra I. That’s closer to Winstones prime but obviously a few years prior to Legra’s peak. I’m going to re-watch Legra-Famechon tonight. It’s a really nice match. I felt Legra got robbed. It’s been a while since I saw Legra-Saldivar. I thought I had a full version of it but can’t find it.
I don't think Manny Pac' would agree that he was overrated, having had the closest of views of the ring canvas in his last fight with Marquez!
Last time I watched Legra-Famechon was about 2 months ago. Yeah, I would say Legra probably won 9 or 10 outta 15 rounds. Excellent technical match, but I don't see how Famechon won.
Indeed. He destroyed him. He did well in the first fight too but Harada deserved the nod because he hurt Fammo a few times and scored 3 knockdowns. It was close though from what I remember.
This. If Marquez is overrated than most former world champions are overrated. Marquez ducked nobody and beat a ton of very skilled fighters.
Yeah, I know. I only mentioned the first two because I was assuming he was asking for fights where Winstone was in his prime and his best form on display. He was a somewhat diminished force in the third fight (mostly due to his exertions and shipped punishment in the late rounds of I and II) and got run underfoot and stopped as a result. Same reason I didn't recommend the Seki fight despite Winstone winning it.
The Beeb broadcast it back in the day iirc because I know people who saw the broadcast, but it seems to be among the morass of lost broadcasts and filmings from that era. Legra was hard done by against Fammo, I agree. I need to rewatch it because I vaguely recall some of the knockdowns that weren't called for Legra were actually legitimate slips by Famechon. I'm not sure though, my memory is shite tbh. Legra didn't do a mass of clean work throughout but just outworked Johnny as I remember it.
Legra wasn't as badly cheated as Harada was though in the first fight against Famechon, that fight WAS a genuine robbery. Harada put forth his last great effort and Famechon showed him too much respect. Not in the rematch though; Harada had much less in the tank and Famechon really went after him and used his size advantage and underrated punch.
There were a number of skips but also legitimate knockdowns IMO. Famechon started well and pulled ahead but then Legr took over and they finished well with Famo digging deep but not quite enough. I think I scored it to Legra by 4.
