No he was not a bum at all. Lost a split to Guillermo Jones, drew with Joey Dwajko and went 8 with Adam Kownacki.Perea was a Puerto Rican Olympian and gatekeeper is actually a good description for him.
Spong is solid but limited. Would love to see him fighting some domestic undefeated HWs like Franklin, Chaney, Mazurek, Rock or Bryan. If you want to place yourself in a good position you should fight those guys and not some gatekeepers or bums. I agree, Perea is definitely better than his record and a solid opponent but it's time to step up the level of opposition. Spong is 33....no reason to waste three more years. If he would be 28/29 okay but now? All or nothing. Go for it. He is a tough test for anyone, for sure.
Can't believe anyone from the K-1 days has enough left in them to make a resurgence in a different sport to be completely honest, though Spong is clearly trying to make a run.
Perea is a solid opponent, he is not a bum. He won the pan american games at 18, and olympian. How deragtory to call a boxer a bum when he risks his life to fight and train as a professional. Perea is tough as nails... he ate some beastly shots and refused to go down despite being a small heavyweight. He was game as ****. So was Tyrone who did what he was supposed to do but his opponent was to legit 2 quit. Those shots from.tyrone would hurt any heavyweight. Anyways Perea is still young and has a good career ahead of him... Tyrone put together beautiful shots with good movement and ring control.. good body shots too as I rewatched the fight yesterday evening. As Perea looks set to face Hrgovic next its time for Tyrone to get a top 20 or top 15 opponent. He needs to move fast because his body can only hold together for so long after decades of.combat.
Saw a documentary on Spong from a couple of years ago. From 14:50 to 16:10 Tyrone Spong and Rashad Evans talk about how close they are, as friends, living together, as friends, moving to America to be together, as friends, and uh cornering each other. This content is protected
Not sure I would quite put Perea at the gatekeeper-level, I think he's a "journeyman" in the good sense. By that I mean he has some limits (his size), but is always in shape, sharp, durable, and ready to head across the globe to test a promising/more talented fighter. The sport needs those types of fighters and they should command more respect (and more money) than they generally get.
Yeah spot on.He is a credible opponent, took this at a weeks notice after the Hrgovic fight fell through and can clearly look after himself and give solid rounds to prospects. I’d like to see a Dubois or Gorman fight him.
I remember Spong's brutal body shots from back in the K-1 days. He's got same very heavy hands, that's for sure. But yes, Spong needs to move fast. He's not a young 33, and he's got only a single run at the top in him IMO before injuries and wear and tear begin to fatally take their toll.
Too true about Sprong needing to make his move quickly. He's 33 years-old - the same age as Manuel Charr (who did lots of kickboxing earlier in his career) when Charr had his double-hip replacements. When it's over...it's over. Just ask David Haye. Sprong lives in the USA - but isn't hooked up with a strong promoter AFAIK. And the HW field in Europe is very crowded. Opponents like Hrgovic and Kuzmin would make sense - but they probably can have lots of other fights made for them. Erkan Teper seems like a possibility, but he's looking more and more like a shot fighter and a victory of him wouldn't mean much. Szpilka? Maybe, but it looks like he's angling for a fight with Eric Molina next. And his scalp probably wouldn't help him all that much. I don't think Sprong's name really moves the needle much in the USA - but I *could* see a fight being made between him and Zhilei Zhang whose promoters are finally showing some willingness to stepping him up. Mariusz Wach and Alexander Dimitrenko would probably be willing to fight Sprong in the EU or the USA - if the money was right. But I don't know if Sprong's backers would bring enough to the table.
