Good points guys. Lots of defenses against the best of whatever strength era you are faced with is extremely impressive.
Jeff Chandler was a very very good fighter. And he did move up against Hector Cortez and almost knocked him out early in the fight. The same Hector Cortez that fought Azumah Nelson at Featherweight in his very next fight and gave Nelson a little bit of hell. Gomez isn't blowing Chandler away in one or two rounds. Pintor gave Gomez hell and I expect Chandler would as well. Gomez was never quite the same after getting stopped by Sanchez. Any Gomez - Chandler fight most likely would have been made after Gomez got stopped by Sanchez. If we're talking prime vs prime, I could see Gomez stopping Chandler in 8 or 9 rounds. But that's not when the fight would have been made. Gomez was a machine. I don't think many other fighters get out of that first round against Sanchez, last 8 rounds, and even win a couple rounds. He beat Pintor with grit as much as skill. I'd take Gomez to stop Chandler late. p.s. Chandler was on coke and shot to pieces when Sandoval beat him.
This matter of "Gomez vs Jofre" is just too much for my poor frazzled brain to take in...gotta study up on this one.
PS. Excuses! Nothing more. A dominate champ got whacked and stopped by a superior fighter. So at a certain point in his reign he gets a pass for losing? He was arrested for dope in 81 so he gets a pass his whole reign? Bull****! Sandoval just had an aggressive very busy style that was too much for him. Like Richie said Chandler was complaining like he was the queen or something. NO WAY Chandler does what Lupe did in 82. He never showed that kind of grit. Quite the opposite for the whiner. Don't ever soil Pintor's name by comparing the two.
Well Chandler did hang in there and never simply quit. You must have an extremely low opinion of Duran.
One has nothing to do with the other. ?. And btw, Duran and Gomez were greats. Chandler went on & on calling himself a great but when the time to put up or shut up came he couldn't compete. A forgotten fighter who disappeared after he lost faster than any fighter ever seen.-and nobody cared or missed him. Another btw, during that era if you called yrself Champion of the Bantamweights, you had better move to LA and prove it in the bantamweight cauldron of The Olympic or Forum against the best. Chandler did not. So while Lupe was World Champ Chandler was champ of Atlantic City.
Well whining to the ref in a loss isn't close to comparable to an out and out quit. Consistency is everything. Many fighters bang on about themselves being great, it's part of the fight game. Chandler had long proven himself a top fighter with 9 defenses of his title. It wasn't like his credibility was on the line - he was long established. Chandler established himself as a very good champion right alongside Pintor. There was virtually nothing between them and truth be told the majority at that time considered Chandler a slightly stronger champ.
And they were proven wrong. Pintor covered himself in glory against the great Gomez, then 3 yrs later came out of retirement, was washed up and still won a second World Championship against a terrific opponent who had just destroyed the top 2 guys in the division 122. Meanwhile Chandler loses and humiliates himself in 2 of his last 3 fights (against the best 2 fighters he ever fought) and slinks away never to be heard from again. And guess what, surprise, the whiner hides behind drug excuses when he lost. But not when he won. No class.
You certainly hate Chandler, jeez man. No-one was proven wrong. Pintor ultimately lost in his game challenge of a fading Gomez. He then beat three absolute nobodies before being by another also ran. Two fights later he had an excellent upset win over Meza before losing 5 of his next 6. So yes he had a game losing challenge against Gomez and after some losses beat Meza before 7 of his next 9. He was actually "retired" for 14 months which i wouldn't overly call a proper retriement. Chandler won 2 of his last 3 if you actually go back and look. Muniz won a narrow split decision over a clowning Chandler in a non title bout. Two fights later he gave him a rematch for the title and pumped him. Chandler didn't slink away, he retired after eye surgery rather than risk blindness. He didn't make excuses for the loss so much as those in the know do. Beside any drug problem the guy had cataracts in both eyes and went into the bout with a shoulder injury - taking shots so he could fight.
C'mon man. You know thats bull****. Chandler could never beat Sandoval. Jeff was in his absolute prime. Near the top of all pfp lists. Did he have hemmoroids too? Maybe a stubbed toe? Give me a break. The whining punk got stopped in front of his own people who booed his gayboy bitching.
It's not crap. Anyone can see Chandler was woeful that night. Chandler barely wins a round against Sandoval yet a guy Chandler schooled not long prior annihilates Sandoval later down the track. People familiar with Chandler would easily see there was something going on. Even under the pump on an off night with gayboy bitching he still didn't quit.

Yes after umpteen defenses over many years over many good fighters Chandler was suddenly found out as a complete rumper. Ok.
