I always thought this was pretty clear. It was whoever was controlling the action that was happening.

But after a few controversial decisions in the last couple of years, i got into a discussion with my friend on this. He said it's actually whoever is controlling the centre of the ring - "...a runner can't win the Ring Generalship criteria". I did try to explain that there was a difference between a runner and someone fighting on the back foot.

His counter was that when a fight/round begins both fighters immediately head to the centre to own that patch but one usually loses. No one starts off backing off. Fair argument but i still thought he was full of ****. BTW he's a "fan", but only of the big fights. Not like one of us who are also interested in non-blockbuster match ups.

Anyway i thought he had some good points and made me re-think my understanding. What does Ring Generalship mean to you? I think the other criteria (Effective Aggression, Clean Punches, Defence) are straightforward. But Ring Generalship has a lot of scope for interpretation...

Ring generalship is ambiguous bull****. It pretty much gives judges the leeway to make up whatever they want and give corrupt cards.

Scoring fights is far more simple than everybody thinks. Its about punching the opponent in his head and body very hard.

It’s bull****, it’s there to give illusion of complexity, nothing else.

immaterial if it doesn't result in a net gain in flush punching

Absolutely. Scoring isn't as difficult to do as many people think it is. Its about punching somebody hard.

One could argue Ali's rope a dope against Foreman was as good an example of "ring generalship" as any, when he realised he no longer could execute his "float like a butterfly" style.
I'd think any strategy that lures your opponent into doing exactly what you want him to, couldn't be described as anything else than "ring generalship". Food for thought....

Whatever you do, moving forward, backwards sideways on the rope, whoever lands more punches is the ring general.

As Lomachenko says, it’s finding a way you want to fight and making your opponent fight the way you want him to fight.

This is the answer i was guna give. Its taking control, not of centre ring but of what is happening. 2 guys go in with a plan and the ring general is the one who imposes their plan while the other guy has to adapt to you because he cant impose his game plan. You have control of the ring, you dictate the shape of the fight. It can be wrestled from you but while you are pulling the strings you have ring generalship.

Your friend has fallen for the old centre of the ring ploy, not wrong but there’s more to it,think of Lomo and those no mas jobs, does everything that his opponents hate.
Tell you a good example Porter v Thurman, close fight but based on Thurman scoring points off the ropes and Porter smothering his own work I’d have say Thurman had the superior ring generalship.

Also worth pointing out that ring generalship has been put out there as some defensive, point scoring wizardry and yet Wilder would argue with his percentage of late KOs that he has ring generalship.
