Someone should have explained to Marciano that he had one punch ko power. He seems to think he was more of an attrition puncher.
Considering Marciano has the sixth shortest average rounds his fights lasted the “attrition” argument holds zero water and is actually one of the low brow arguments on this page that drives me insane. If Marciano isn’t a power puncher then almost no one is.
This is literally the worst performance of Marciano's filmed career. He was publicly bashed for this fight. Please do not base his power off of one off night alone
I feel sorry for C ockell more than any other fighter. C ockell was a very good & capable fighter, he just wasn't a HW, nor did he have the punch power to stop Marciano. His medical condition bloated him up and forced the weight he could never shake. Add to that England/Britain's desperation for World Titles at HW and among the Bigboys… the "Horizontal Heavyweight" joke was too big a pill to swallow for British Pride (the Home of Boxing), and C ockell was another British Bigman pushed in whether he had a chance or not. IF not for the illness & weight problem, C ocky Don might have won a World L-HW title. a great fighter, Contender and British Champion... No Shame there for Don C ockell. looks about a 16' Ring, maybe 18', the Smaller Ring always favouring the Brawler/Fighter over a boxer.
This was basically a test for his nose that had been split open almost down to the bone in the 2nd Ezzard Charles fight in September 1954.
Look at those guys, examine their records! Lastarza,Cockell,Layne,Moore don't go more than 5 rds a piece with Liston,Foreman,Lewis.
Ironically Liston is one of the all time leading power punchers....ever and had a slightly lower average round stoppage. So that’s not really a negative. Yes Liston and Foreman were better power punchers does that mean anyone who punched w slightly less force is not a power puncher? That kind of thinking is irrational.
Very misleading statistic, considering how little of his career Marciano spent fighting against the world class opposition of his day (such as it was). He only had early stoppages in something like 8 of the 23 fights in the prime of his career.
Cockell doesn't look as doughy in that photo has he does on the film. Looks about like Vinny Pazienza.
