I've taken this thread topic to mean 'the Frazier of his actual fight with a young Foreman', with any version of George you want to pick across the 8 years he competed, during the '90s.

It's worth noting that Frazier did much better in the rematch despite being in much worse physical condition. I'm not sure exactly what conclusion to draw from this, but I'm pretty sure it's significant.

I am aware of the discrepancies in the decision.

Now I have to be mean.

Old Foreman was one of the worst fighters ever to gain the lineal title.

Every single time that he fought a top ten opponent, he either lost, or won a controversial decision, the sole exception being Moorer.

He avoided Bowe and Lewis for a reason.

I respect Foreman for what he did in his old age, but only because he was old.

He was just an old man, with a big punch, and a bit of cunning.

    Impressive?

    Yes

    Serious threat to other ATGs?

    No!

I am not sure he did better, as much as he didn’t quite force the fight as much. I think he looked worse, he just toned the aggression down

Interesting? I was thinking of a prime Frazier.... I would still lean towards Joe of thier first fight either way, but not with major confidence. I think while George had lost some snap, he still had respectable power. Enough power to stun/Hurt Joe. What I am not sure he had was the follow up ability to get the job done. Under your scenario I am less confident and would call it 50/50 but fall off the fence by still picking Joe

You may be right, I'd have to re-watch the fight, but I remember Joe landing several genuinely solid hooks to enthusiastic cheers. Even so, I don't remember Foreman looking phased in the least.

Me neither. Moreover, having re-watched the Holyfield/Foreman bout, not all that long ago, there were some pretty impressive and heavy shots thrown, between them. Foreman wasn't winning the fight, but he was giving an iron-chinned Holyfield, in his pomp, plenty to think about.

Old Foreman beat Michael Moorer, ancient Gerry Cooney, overrated Pierre Coetzer, overrated Shannon Briggs and pretender Adilson Rodriguez.

Old Foreman lost to Evander Holyfield, Tommy Morrison, Alex Stewart and Axel Schulz.

Old Foreman drew with Lou Savarese.

Old Foreman carefully avoided Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Tony Tucker, Riddick Bowe, Razor Ruddock, Lennox Lewis, Ray Mercer, Frank Bruno, and a few other 80's retreads.

Make no mistake, if the money was right I'm sure Old Foreman would've fought any heavyweight champ that he avoided otherwise.

Prime Joe Frazier beats the stuffing out of slow, ponderous, Old george Foreman.

Ok, I will put FOTC era Joe, not just the night but the era, in with “old prime George” (OPG) and feel pretty about it. I just don’t have confidence in post FOTC Joe against anyone not named Ali. George has even said he was lucky he didn’t have to face the earlier version of Smokin Joe, yes I am also falling into the trap of listening to George boxing’s magic eight ball.

    Frazier anhilates Old Foreman.

He doesn't stop him, but he'll out a beating on him for the full 12.

George might land a big shot every now and again, but not enough to knock out Joe.

Could Joe Frazier have beaten Alex Stewart, Axel Shulz, Tommy Morrison and Shannon Briggs?

Because they went the distance with old Foreman and some argue, won against him.

That seems like 4 new threads. I'd vote yes every time.

I also think Frazier should probably be favoured over those guys - although there's always room for a good debate, LOL. I think that old Foreman would simply be too slow and not explosive enough to repeat the carpet bombing he laid down in his prime. Not saying Frazier beats old Foreman easily, because many have pointed out that the stylistic matchup still favours Foreman and that he might well land a bunch of good whallops.
