Observe the best of both of these fighters available on film. Put your Brain Hat on and analyze the usual factors, speed, power, footwork, defense, jab, punch arsenal and selection, ring IQ... Consider the athletic and boxing ability of the opponent. And draw your conclusion. Who wins a 12 rounder betwixt these two named Luis and how do they do it?
Gonna go against the grain of this thread I think Firpo had a better showing against superior competition in Dempsey vs Firpo. I feel that Firpo would get off of the canvas to knock Ortiz out with a big shot It's a close fight so Ortiz picks don't surprise me
You think he hits harder than Luis' educated shots? Did Firpo ever stop anyone as good as Jennings who gave one of the most dominant champs in history all he could handle? Or are you thinking that a 400 year old Willard qualifies?
Are you pretending like he didn't get dropped 7 times in round 1, and KOed in the second by Dempsey? Dempsey played with fire, and Firpo lucked out, and he still got knocked out soon after. Given Ortiz couldn't KO Malik Scott or Dave Allen, the idea he could KO Firpo half as quick as Dempsey is laughable.
I'll take Ortiz. Clearly a better boxer with more size. That of course doesn't translate into Wilder destroying Dempsey which is the purpose of this thread. Lest we forget, Dempsey fought a rather stupid fight by fighting exactly Firpo's kind of fight because he (for some reason) felt he had to out-macho the Argentine. Lest we also forget, Ortiz pretty much beat Wilder from pillar to post in their fight and had him nearly out by KO. One wonders what might have been if Ortiz hadn't been as old as Castro and if Wilder hadn't been given an extra minute to rest. I think Firpo might make a fight vs Ortiz a fun brawl before getting battered to bits by counterpunching and jabs.
50/50. Ortiz has a lot of amateur experience and is a skilled southpaw, but he also has a very suspect chin and is a complete sucker for a good right hand, which Firpo has. Ortiz would display his skill-set like he always does and most likely rack up the points, but if Firpo lands clean on Ortiz’s chin I could see Firpo stopping him. Also, I just wanted to add that boxrec has fixed Ortiz’s reach, since for years they had his reach incorrectly listed at 84”, when it clearly wasn’t. Now they just need to fix his height, since Ortiz is nowhere near 6’4”. Ortiz is 6’2” at best, but most likely closer to 6’1.5”.
I don't even think it's competitive enough to be fun. It would be brutal though. Firpo's aggressive, wild-charging style would get him slaughtered against someone with Ortiz's technical skills and power. I see a one-sided beating.
Where does this idea of Ortiz having a particularly weak chin come from? He wasn't beaten down 7 times in a round by a sub 200 pounder.
