Arbachakov imo. Less athletic than Canizales, but with his footwork he did a much better job at controlling distance to where he could nail his opponents and not get countered in return. Canizales' footwork was great for getting off his combos, but he was never a hard target to find. I think best footwork at the lower weights has to go to young Gomez. Like Arbachakov, a master at controlling distance, only Bazooka was much more athletic than Yuri.
Still on the fence with this one. Canizales had flashier footwork while Arbachakov had better placement for his feet to generate power. Part of me wishes that I included Ricardo Lopez, Miguel Canto, Wilfredo Gomez, and Gilberto Roman in this thread but I think that would have been overkill.
Hard for me to contrast the 2 but I think Yuri definitely had the better footwork and placement from a technical standpoint. I think his footwork enabled him to control distance better, not that Orlando was bad it just seemed a lot more speed and reflex based. Why am I not surprised that the GOAT, the overrated Gomez gets mentioned in yet another thread that is not even about him...I am expecting him to be named top 25 ATG shortly
Flo mentioned great footwork in lighter weight fighters. Gomez most certainly belongs in such a conversation, as he unquestionably had great footwork. You're letting your personal dislike of Gomez turn to bias. No other ever called Gomez the GOAT, unless you're talking about Puerto Rican fighters, and he arguably is the GOAT Puerto Rican - either him or Ortiz. How is he overrated?
I actually like Gomez (the boxer) and think he was/is great. My dislike is of the fans who label him “unbeatable” at super Bantam. And then get ripped for merely suggesting that someone....gasp....might even be slightly competitive with him. I think he is great, I just feel his greatness (along with Zarate) is overstated. I view him on Julian Jackson level (not meant as a knock on either one). And his deficiencies at FW losing to Sanchez Nelson....and SFW robbery (one of the rare times I will use this word) of Lockridge show his limitations above that bast ard division....yet he is frequently picked to beat great/borderline greats at that weight, and heaven forbid if you disagree with that. Anyway my apologies to the TS I didn’t mean to hijack this thread (it is a good one) and I will save any rebuttal for a more appropriate thread.
Yeah, Canizales always seemed vulnerable to an Class-A technician who could neutralize his offense. Probably why he never really fought an A-Class opponent. I'm more impressed with Yuri in the Kittikasem fights than Canizales in the Seabrooks fights. Kittakasem was excellent fighter and a dangerous puncher, while Seabrooks was only a decent fighter.
I dont know. Canizales creates unique angles with his pivots and that is really hard to learn much less execute . Yuri appears basic in his footwork but its just subtle .Both were champions for awhile and both were proven . I think both had great footwork but Canizales was much more creative with his.
Canizales did have very good offensive footwork. I always likened him to a mini Napoles in that regard. Difference being, Napoles was a whole lot better defensively and could inflict damage while taking little in return. Canizales always ate shots. To his credit, he had an excellent chin.
