Just wanted to know if anyone remembers him or has any insights about him.

Fought a faded Foster for the LHW title in 74. Many/most feel he won and apparently Foster said you just know when you get a draw in your hometown that you lost? Not sure if it is true or not.

Has anyone seen the whole fight? Apparently it was on closed circuit and came on after Frazier vs Quarry II. There is an incomplete version on YouTube does the full fight exist?

Thinking about watching his fight with Conteh tonight or tomorrow. Clancy said Ahumada won, but the British crowd and cheering influenced the scoring. sour grapes?

Clancy also accused the Foster fight of having tampered cards, but seems to have lost that challenge as well.

Anyway does anyone remember him and if so what are your thoughts on him? Thanks

Ahumada came nowhere close to beating Conteh.

I'd recommend you watching that fight. Excellent fight, and the best performance of Conteh's career. He won it clearly.

I saw the telecast in '74 and I felt Ahumada beat Foster. As for the Conteh fight, Ahumada looked like he had it after 10 rounds but then Conteh turned it up a gear and won it down the stretch on my card below.

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Ahumada
    Round 3: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 4: 10-9 Ahumada
    Round 5: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 6: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 7: 10-9 Ahumada
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Ahumada
    Round 10: 10-9 Ahumada
    Round 11: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 12: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 13: 10-9 Conteh
    Round 14: 10-10 Even
    Round 15: 10-9 Conteh

    Total: 145-142 Conteh

It wasn't until the 13th, 14th, 15th things got a little sloppy, but they had set a great pace earlier. Two warriors and Ahumada just seemed that hard luck fighter losing two close decisions to Conteh and Galindez and getting robbed - by way of a draw - against Foster. All for the title.

I saw the closed circuit Foster fight. I thought, along with most in attendance, that Ahumada won a close fight.

Galindez was his nemesis.....Jorge going 1-4 vs Victor

1975-06-30 : Victor Galindez 174 lbs beat Jorge Victor Ahumada 175 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15
    Bout Summary
"Victor Galindez scored a unanimous 15 round decision over Jorge Ahumada to keep his light heavyweight title. The champion piled up points with blistering lefts and right uppercuts that repeatedly caught Ahumada as he bore in to take the fight to Galindez. In the 3rd round, Galindez dropped the challenger with a stiff left that seemed to land just as the bell sounded, ending the round. Ahumada's corner howled when referee Jimmy Devlin ruled it a knockdown but Galindez insisted that the ruling was correct. Gil Clancy, Ahumada's manager, thought the controversial knockdown had "a psychological effect over the judges favoring Galindez". But the decision was unanimous and one-sided." - Associated Press.

    Notes
    Post-Fight Quotes
    • "It was a legal knockdown. It was exactly one second before the gong and that is why the referee counted through six." - Victor Galindez, on the 3rd round knockdown.
    • "He was the same old Galindez tonight. Strong and crude." - Jorge Victor Ahumada.

It was an outrage that Ahumada didn't leave that Albuquerque ring with the light heavyweight title...Jorge found Foster all night with that left hook. It was very, very proper, wise and prudent for Foster to abdicate that title however, as after Jorge had his way with him so well, just think of what Victor Galindez would have done to Bobby.

Oh I thoroughly dig this post....I attended the closed circuit event of these bouts that night....and for the life of me, I believed that the shot that Victor hit Jorge was a legit kd,...but was under the impression that the ref deemed it an after the bell sort of thing...and I never noticed a count administered. I've learned something after 44 years! Thanks for this once again Longhhorn71!!

I really liked Jorge Ahumada though...but realized that he would always finish second to Victor Galindez.

That really was an impressive, picturesque knockdown, as I thought at the time....and all along I thought it was a shame that he was screwed out of it.....I'm glad that VG actually got credit for it!

Hey Red! Late bud and I saw it too closed circuit downtown Indy on the Circle, medicated and pumped to the gills of course. :)
A bit off thread initially here but:
We really thought Quarry had a shot here (tho the Joe Alexander fight had flown under our radar and we're thinking only about the Shavers fight the previous December). Jerry had said before the fight that he was going to try to 'box' Joe to which Joe replied: "Jerry's a slugger; once I tag him he's coming off those toes". After the 1st round, which we saw as a draw, it was all down hill from there for Jerry.
Remember the LH Joe landed (4th round?) It was sad to watch. More impressive than Joe's LH against Ali in the 11th round in the FOTC.
On to New Mexico later in the evening.
IMO Jorge built a lead early with crisp counters and left hooks. In the "Championship Rounds" Bob pulled out what savvy he had left along with that rapier jab. A draw? Perhaps but it was obvious Foster had seen better days. Afterwards Jorge, thru an interpreter said: "A draw HERE is like a win"!
Sidebar: Wasn't Galindez supposed to fight Foster that night and it was scrapped for purse reasons?
Lastly (and I've mentioned this before) I would have loved to have seen a Ahumada-Lopez pvp scrap!
    Ringside with dogs n' beer!
    Another 'lastly' :)
Conteh beat Ahumada for the title: it was clear IMO but John was clearly puffy knowing he had been in a war!
    My $0.02

Jowcol, I don't know about Foster-Galindez in '74, but I do know Galindez signed to defend his title against Foster in '77 with Foster's purse being $80,000 and the bout to take place in South Africa. The bout was canceled the day before or something like that when Foster refused to take a pre-fight physical. Very odd.

I thought Conteh deserved the decision, but it was a close fight.I haven't seen the Foster fight, but by all accounts Bob was lucky.
Ahumada appears to have been unlucky in that he was a contemporary of Galindez who was just that shade better.
Alvaro Lopez suffered from the same thing.
