I still do. And by the way if you want to be a *****, you claimed you were "in the industry", alluding to being at the thick end of the commercial arm of the soft drink industry, then you changed tack and said you were in health education. Which is a rather stark difference and frankly more alarming IMHO.

There is a reason why shop shelves are full of reduced sugar drinks now, it's because people are buying them, do you think the average Dave gives a toss if he's drinking sugar or aspartame as long it "tastes sweet" and is the same price as "coke used to be".

If they weren't in demand they wouldn't be sold. Likewise, have you noticed how hard it is to find full sugar drinks now? You literally have to search them out. If makers of full sugar drinks were made to put pictures on the cans of diabetic foot ulcers I'm pretty sure their sales would go down even more, but I'm sure you're going to tell me the otherwise

Anyway, as has been noted you're being contrarian and arguing black is white for the sake of it. Cheerio .

That was a really good debate that, shame it had to involve insulting each other.

I’m naive to this, I drink ‘diet’ and ‘zero sugar’ sweet drinks all the time. I’ve been terrible with sugary drinks and foods throughout my life and i’m trying harder to avoid excesses of it...but I keep hearing that the non sugar alternatives are also bad for me. How is this so, serious question?

I never once claimed to be in the soft drink industry you utter ******. Stop being so stupid. If I did QUOTE ME. Why do people lie on here when there lies can be instantly proven to be just that. A lie.

Yes. The average person does give a toss. Loads hate the overly sweet after taste of sweeteners. Hence why the two largest companies, coke and Pepsi, have both kept the sugar contents the same as they where before the tax.

There’s a MASSIVE difference between smoking and lung cancer and sugary drinks and diabetes. MASSIVE DIFFERENCE. You obviously have no awareness of this difference.

You have a poor awareness of reality, the average Joe.

You probably don’t even realise diet drinks are likely to be just as bad if not worse than full sugar drinks, so implying that because everyone is now drinking the diet equivalents and that this will help is not entirely correct.

    Few reasons pal.

    1. They effect your tooth just as bad, if not worse than full sugar drinks. Colgate have a few studies in their website testing full sugar drinks diet drinks milk and water and what detrimental effect they have on tooth decay, bacteria levels in the mouth etc.

    2. Having a diet drink is definitely better in the short term, because it has zero calories. Compared to hundreds in a sugary drink. However, your brain expects to receive energy when drinking the drink but receives none. The theory is that you will end up eating more later in the day or week if you drink diet drinks. Try it. If you find yourself having Diet Coke through out the day, see how hungry you feel in the afternoon. Chances are a takeaway will be on the cards or something else unhealthy.

    3. Then you’ve got the actually sweeteners themselves. There’s not a massive amount of evidence on how they could effect the body over a long period of time. Remember, back in the 50s smoking was encouraged by doctors for promoting health! Until research uncovered this not to be the case. The same thing could happen for sweeteners in the future when there is more sufficient evidence.

Thanks bud. You’re right, I do end up really hungry in the evening and end up grazing on fattening snacks/meals, contradicting my efforts earlier in the day.

... and that’s the problem - so many different ingredients in not just Coke, Diet Coke, but all processed food/drinks, you d have to be food scientist to know what ingredients are to be avoided. And even then, there might not be enough adequate research out there to know of the long term health consequences to eating this stuff. Best advice - eat as natural as possible - don’t microwave plastic containers (cancer causing properties) & stevia is a good natural alternative to sugar.

I’m hitting 40 in a few weeks (i’m devastated lads) and i’m planning on marking it with some big health changes which include giving up red meat, processed meats, microwave meals, fizzy drinks (apart from lager) etc. And actually exercising.

I’m no expert, but have a wife whos really into healthy living. I’m already in my 40’s. I made a few basic changes which really helped me increase my general well-being:
    - Increase fitness - any type of exercise - get a dog if you haven’t, forces you to exercise even when it’s cold.
    - Cutting down on sugar is great, but that means alcohol too. You’re will power to exercise / eat healthy will also diminishe greatly after alcohol. (As does you’re will power not to press the PPV button!)
    - Stay away from processed food - generally full of preservatives / nitrates & linked to many cancers - by cooking from fresh you will naturally eat more fresh food. If it’s microwaveable it’s crap.
    - Less caffeine - hard at first, but you’ll notice the difference - it might wake you up in the morning, but too much increases anxiety. I recently started drinking green tea - took a bit of getting use too, but now it’s my preferred drink - also full of antioxidants which help flush out the bad stuff. You will also sleep better.

Changing bad habits isn’t easy, but sounds like you’re already on the right track - stick with it and you’ll really notice the difference - mentally as much as physically

Here's a good, non quackish summation - well worth a read.

Each to their own of course. If the alternative to having them is you having more sugar then maybe they're working for you. Just try and taper down though maybe? Could help adjust your palate and soon you won't be craving them as much. You would be amazed how much your gut bacteria actually influence your decisions.

Or alternatively look at it this way - you need hydration. Take a water bottle with you at all times and stay well hydrated and drink from it before you go near an artificially sweetened drink. That should start to reduce your consumption, then go from there.

You planning on loosing some weight? If so, why don’t you post your starting weight and then weekly / biweekly updates to see how your progress.

Granted this is boxing forum but a little thread on it I would find interesting, and a few other posters looking at this thread. I’d rather read that than a new one on who avoided who out of AJ / Wilder!

It can also be excellent for motivation.

In 6 months you might be the next arnie!

Haha, I might just do that mate. A bit of stick from you lads might be just what I need, “what have you been eating, Twentyman, marbles”?

I’d like to lose some weight deffo from my 40th. I’m currently 204 pounds but at 6’0, I should probably be around 180.
