A few folk on here seem to have the opinion that size counts for very little in boxing which is baloney IMO. If what some claim is true then why do we have weight classes?
We have weight classes because in general a good big guy will beat a good little guy. It's why I have to laugh at these people thinking AJ will beat Miller. The guy is giving up 100 pounds in weight. That's Minimum weight to Heavyweight, and yet Joshua is somehow going to win? Please. Miller is gonna walk right through Joshua the same way Joshua would walk right through Amir Khan. Size matters.
But the thing is AJ will almost certainly beat Miller whereas Lomachenko would never beat AJ. Why do you think that is? AJ is good but Lomachenko is elite.
Well Lomachenko would never be sanctioned in a fight against Joshua so we'll never know. But I don't see AJ dealing with the punches or being able to hurt a man 100 pound heavier than he.
I don't think people think size doesn't matter. When two equally skilled fighters meet, the bigger fighter will have a distinct advantage. It's just that a higher skill level of one fighter over another can sometimes (but not always) negate a size advantage. The old adage of a good big'un beats a good little'un holds true. But a good little'un could also beat an average big'un. I don't see a contradiction or problem with that logic.
There's quite a spectrum of relative power for a weight and chin for a weight. Same as speed. That's why there are so many opinions.
Of course nobody is suggesting that size doesn't matter. What we are debating, is the extent to which it matters!
I think they realize that size matters—they just think that some of the medium-sized (165-190lb) men of yesteryear were super heroes. The normal rules of athletics and physical activities don’t apply to those guys because they’re basically immortal. But other than that, they recognize that size matters.
Here's the question though, why do you think Evander Holyfield lost to Lennox Lewis. That was a case of a great big'un against a great little'un.
Doesn`t work that way because reach is a factor also, AJ punches powerful enough to knock anyone out and if this Miller is so big, ten he`s probably slow like Valuev who was 7'2 and lost to 6'3 Haye who was a former cruiser, by your logic Miller would beat every fighter that was ever the heavyweight champ of the world and Foreman would have beat Holyfield in 1990, even though he was far too slow carrying the extra weight, you need a great jab at heavyweight because it`s all about who can set up their power shots with the jab first.
Holy was advanced in years also, but yes Lewis benifitted greatly by being taller and longer than opponents often.
