Possibly. He mastered offense as well as defense and was more well rounded. He also challenged himself a lot more than Floyd moving from middleweight to heavyweight. The amount of size and weight advantage he was giving to opponents in the end was very impressive. Was he as talented as Floyd? Maybe. But he wasn't as disciplined, which is why he was sometimes inconsistent.

With a massive weight climber like Toney or Duran, you kind of wish that they'd stayed near their best weight and fought the best rather than moving up four or five weight classes to fight contenders or journeymen. If Duran had stayed in the lightweight/welterweight range he could have fought Arguello and Pryor but not Hagler or Barkley. If Toney had stayed at middleweight to light heavyweight he could have fought Hopkins, Eubank, Benn, McClellan, Jackson, and Calzaghe, but he misses out on Holyfield and Jirov.

Look at this crybaby victim mentally some of the worst crying ever. Do you need a bottle? How do you explain pac then crybaby? Or let me guess this only applies to ee fighters, right? Ggg isnt rated as highley as pbf because he's not good enough.:deal: Anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that pbf is the more skilled and better fighter and if they were the same same size pbf would box circles around that mummy and the fight wouldnt even be worth talking about.
Lastly jacobs whose gggs best win wouldnt even be in pbfs top 10 best win hell id argue he wouldnt even be in his top 15 best.

By a hair, yes. Although I am biased, I'm a huge Toney fan.

Yes, James Toney style was far more superior in the pocket than Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s. Yes, his dieting was an issue but he still became a champ[ion from Middleweight-Heavyweight.

From Floyd’s perspective, Toney’s problem was he fought everyone. He should have drained, ducked and cherrypicked. Then he would have a record like Floyd!

Meh.. about equal I’d say. Equal in the class category too. They both have a lot in common including being the recipients of GIFT decisions that protected their 0’s.

Also worth taking into account Toney had a comparatively late start to boxing after his eggball aspirations were dashed whereas Floyd was a-shoulder-rolling and a-pull-countering from infancy.

I tend to put him and Qawi on a similar level to Classic Section GOAT Sam Langford because they were so ready and able to fight men naturally much bigger than themselves. Even among the weight climbers, these guys are special. Floyd and Morales moved up five weight classes but the guys they fought all looked as big as them, which makes you wonder if they were just size/weight bullies at their earlier weights. But Toney, Qawi, and Duran all looked like dwarfs compared to the people they were fighting. They'd give up five or six inches of height and fight monsters. To me, that's the most impressive thing you can do, much more impressive than a padded perfect record.

This is a confusing thread. Talent is equal to wins? Talented as in a boxer I would think you are asking. Probably not although Toney fought everyone at anytime, which was very different to Floyd. I find it hard to rate Floyd. Toney is easier, he fought everyone when they were good and some he didn't beat. I am not sure what I am saying. Floyd was the greater boxer in that he won when James did not.. So I would say no Toney was not more talented it seems. Floyd beat good guys but not when those guys were at the height of their careers.

Talent meaning if you had to take a 5 year old Floyd or Toney and train them up, who is most likely to do better. I’d say Floyd. Hardwork is talent just as is stamina, speed, power etc. The ability to mentally zone in and just work work work, not everyone can do that. Guys who have insane work ethics are freaks.

    Just ask Gai sensei

I don't care what your gay sensei told you. All the work in the world won't do **** if you don't have the talent.

Toney is my favorite fighter ever. It's just two different mindsets. Floyd a perfectionist, James, the soldier in the trench. Toney's chin was better. Floyd's defense was better. James offense was far more fluid, we got to see the best of James because he was just that bloody arrogant. Floyd was more focused on record than resume.
