Someone said on a thread that Roy would have stopped Canelo in 7-8 rounds prime for prime, but I countered that Canelo could take GGG`s shots so he could take Roy`s, was I right? Even if Roy had better one punch power at the heavier weight I still feel GGG is the better finisher, using his jabs to set up power shots much better than Roy did.
I’ve never been hit by either of them, obviously, but if I had to guess, I’d say GGG probably had more force behind his punches, but Roy Jones – not unlike Floyd Patterson in his prime – was far quicker and more adept at hitting people with punches they didn’t see. I’ve no doubt in my mind that Roy Jones could knock Canelo out; whether he would on a given night is impossible to say. Canelo has a great chin on him and Roy could be overly cautious at times.
I'd guess they are about on par power wise at MW, but otherwise very different. GGG has that thudding power that makes you stay down because you don't want anymore of that pain, whereas Roy more blitzed guys with punches that just exploded into their consciousness from nowhere. Canelo has a hell of a chin and very good defense, so he could probably take Roy's punches. It would probably be somewhat like Hopkins vs Roy. Roy's explosive power keeping him honest and a bit tentative but not really hurting him. My best guess, anyhow.
no jones was naturally bigger. 3Gs ko rate at top level is 25%, but at bum club level its much higher of course. Yet percentages might not be the whole story, since we only have 4 top level fights for us to judge 3G on, and Jones had 6 or 7 times more than that. Perhaps we should wait till 3G has fought some more top level fighters than just Lemmy whom he koed, by the end of his career he may have fought 30+ top levels like jones did but at the moment its just 4
Both different style s of actually delivering the power shots but not much difference in level s of power But GGG more likely to beat someone down whereas Jones was pretty good at delivering one shot blasts very quickly.
I think Roy is capable of stopping Canelo. He certainly has the snap to do it. He is tenative, not so much so at MW, but cautious, so he may have settled into the idea of moving (easily) away and potshotting with 1's, 1-2's, and hooks to take a wide decision if he felt early on that Canelo could take it. I think of GGG as more of a triples hitter. Good body puncher. Heavy puncher, not a lights-out puncher. Roy was. Their power is different. As stated above, it remains to be seen until GGG fights another credible opponent or 3 to make a better judgement on his punching at the highest level. Both very impressive punchers, Roy more dazzling and explosive against similar low-level opponents. I always categorize GGG with Kostya Tszyu- both similar in appearance, both from obscure countries, both heavy punchers who could show speed in flashes, but generally methodical, deliberate body punchers who had excellent power in both hands, particularly with the right. Both have defensive shortcomings, both with seemingly iron chins. I can't help but think its a matter of time before someone pulls a Vince Phillips on him. Not that I want that.
Jones definitely had more one punch power due to his incredible speed in delivering knockout punches. And, yes, he likely would have stopped Canelo.
I feel Canelo would take Roy`s punches better than Roy would take his and Canelo`s body attack is vicious also.
Roy took the punches of NUMEROUS fighters who hit harder than Canelo, and showed no ill effects whatsoever until late in his career. Canelo has never been hit by anything close to what Roy can do. And, I am not just stating this because I think Roy has better one punch power than GGG. It is also because the version of GGG that fought Canelo looked old. He was much less aggressive than normal in both fights. Although I think he certainly won the first fight (and, arguably, the second fight), he did so by boxing. GGG hardly landed any real meaningful blows in either fight. Neither man did. It was more of a chess match (kind of like Hagler-Leonard). And, just like in Hagler-Leonard, the older fighter was picked at just the right time. And, the more popular fighter (Leonard) won without ever coming close to hurting Hagler.
