What if.... 2007 - Mayweather fights Antonio Margarito in Spring 2007 and wins a unanimous decision 116-112. 2008 - Mayweather fights Paul Williams in Spring 2008 and wins a unanimous decision 116-112. 2010- Mayweather and Pacquiao agree to a mega fight on Cinco de Mayo, with Mayweather outpointing the fighter of the decade 115-113 in a fairly entertaining bout that is a close, but clear win for Mayweather. 2016 - Mayweather comes out of retirement to challenge Errol Spence, and on a September evening in Vegas wins a unanimous decision 117-111. If he had dared to be Icarus and risk the sun melting his wings, where would he rank all time?
Very highly. I haven’t put in the work necessary to formalize a serious P4P list, but can imagine him ranking somewhere in the top 20/15 all time.
Up near the very top - the timing is part of the challenge and facing these guys when they were at the peak of their powers and beating them would make Floyd's greatness undeniable in my view.
He would have a much better claim to the title TBE. But it's not realistic to give him all these wins
2007--"Margarito is trash. He's scared of the lineal champ, Baldomir." 2008--"Williams was already exposed by Quintana." 2010--"It would be different at 130. Manny isn't a real welterweight and he hurt his shoulder." 2016--"Spence is unproven. He'll never fight Crawford."
I've said it before. I don't really think the older champions were better overall, but they took risks which allowed the greats like Armstrong to achieve heights that are unreachable for more carefully managed fighters. Mayweather might have been the greatest of all time, but he didn't do half as much to prove it as Greb etc.
What if Floyd hadn't fought Corrales, rematched Catillo, De La Hoya, Hatton, Judah, Cotto, Mosley and Canelo ?? The haters would say he's avoiding the REAL danger fights while feasting on contenders like Williams, tortoises like Margarito and flyweights with injured shoulders like Pacquiao.
Floyd beat Mosley right after he destroyed Margarito and also beat Cotto who destroyed Quintana and Maravilla, both of whom beat Williams
