Amazing that I never watched this or their rematch before. Missed it first time around, but better late then never. Holmes v Spinks I

    Round 1: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 2: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 3: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 4: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 7: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 8: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 9: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 12: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 15: 10-9 Holmes

    Total: 145-143 Spinks

Age. Just a matter of Holmes being unable to pull that trigger and why he stopped the body punches - which clearly effected Spinks - I'll never know.

I am taking a look at some controversial Canelo fights over the next week or so, and started with Canelo vs Trout-

2 thoughts Paulie is the worst and tries to convince everyone, what they are seeing in spite of their own eyes. He is worse as a commentator than he is as a boxer, by a wide margin. He is likely my least favorite EVER well at least he is the GOAT at something!

2 I think the judges cards while wider than mine are defensible. I have 2 clear rds for Trout making 118 possible, and 3 clear for Canelo. The other 7 were tighter IMO, but Trout just didn’t land enough. Throwing 8 jabs and landing 1 them getting countered by 2 of 3 landing is not controlling the fight no matter how frequently Paulie days it.

    Anyway
    1 Canelo
    2 Canelo (Canelo 20-18)
    3 Trout (Canelo 29-28)
    4 Canelo (Canelo 39-37)
    5 Trout (Canelo 48-47)
    6 Trout (57-57)
    7 Canelo 10-8 (Canelo 67-65)
    8 Trout (Canelo 76-75)
    9 Canelo (Canelo 86-84)
    10 Canelo (Canelo 96-93)
    11 Canelo (Canelo 106-102)
    12 Trout (Canelo 115-112)

    Canelo 115-112

Lawrence Clay Bey vs Charles Shufford

    1 10-9 Clay Bey
    2 10-9 Clay Bey
    3 10-9 Clay Bey
    4 10-9 Shufford
    5 10-9 Shufford
    6 10-9 Shufford
    7 10-9 Shufford
    8 10-9 Clay Bey
    9 10-9 Shufford
    10 10-9 Clay Bey

    95-95

    Close fight
Very good fight to score for their different styles and very divided rounds.
Shufford at times showed an excellent defense, he lacked heart to win the fight

Anybody ever sit down and actually score the Tyson - Douglas bout rather than just sit back and take in the amazement of seeing Tyson getting thumped?. I saw some blurbs on the fight and never really noticed the scores. Larry Rozadilla had it 88-82 for Douglas through 9 completed rounds, which is sensible. However, the 2 Asian judges had it 86-86 Even and 87-86 in favor of Tyson. I had to sit down on this one.

    Round 1: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 2: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 5: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 6: 10-9 Tyson
    Round 7: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 8: 10-8 Tyson (scores a knockdown)
    Round 9: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 10: KO for Douglas

Total through 9 completed rounds: 87-84 Douglas

Can't see what fight the Asian judges were watching. I know there was a lot of talk of King getting to them, but I doubt that. No one gave Douglas a chance, so there wouldn't be any reason to put anyone in the pocket.

I think a Con like King would always have a contingency plan. This is particularly likely given he knew how Tyson's training was going and was present when Greg Page knocked him down in sparring.

Just finished Mercer-Cooper, as it was highlighted last week on a thread here and I'd not seen it, with them being heavyweights and all.

Good fight. Both are limited bangers without a hell of a lot of science in what they do, but they both came in motivated and ready to fight thill they dropped. They damn near did. Mercer drops the slow-starting Cooper with a straight right in the first, then they settle in to a grueling, mauling battle on the inside. Mercer has some difficulty initially getting through Cooper's peek-a-boo guard, and throws some awkward-looking things, but he soon opens up to the body and with uppercuts, opening Cooper up better for some straight punches.

In the sixth, Mercer's jaw becomes horribly swollen and disfigured, and it takes him about three rounds to get his bearings again. Credit to him for fighting through that, it had to be awful. Cooper as always has those sneaky-short punches that he throws inside the bigger man's wide shots but he doesn't do it enough, and is pushed off balance by Mercer. In the final two rounds they've pretty much had it, and they coast a bit, which they've frankly earned. Mercer even jabs and dances in the 12th as much as his failing legs allow.

    1. Mercer, 10-8
    2. Cooper, 10-9
    3. Mercer, 10-9
    4. Even, 10-10
    5. Mercer 10-9
    6. Cooper, 10-9
    7. Cooper 10-9
    8. Mercer 10-9
    9. Mercer 10-9 (Mercer seems suddenly awake again)
    10. Mercer 10-9
    11. Mercer 10-9
    12. Mercer 10-9

    117-111 Mercer

    Canelo Alvarez vs Erislandy Lara

Back to watching some controversial Canelo cards, and I don’t see this one as controversial as many seem too? It is my 2nd time watching this fight but my first scoring it. My thought from the first go around just an overview gut feeling was Alvarez dominated the fight, but I did not score it till today. To me Lara did not do enough. He was on his bicycle all night and didn’t exchange enough. He had foot and hand speed and would flash a combo and move but nothing of substance for the most part imo. The 4 rounds I did have fit Lara I thought were close enough to be even or go the other way. Of the Canelo rds I only thought 1 was close enough to be even. For me he won 4-9 clear? But perhaps others see it differently? I guess that is part of what makes scoring debating outcomes fun.

    1 Lara
    2 Canelo (19-19)
    3 Lara (Lara 29-28)
    4 Canelo (38-38)
    5 Canelo (Canelo 48-47)
    6 Canelo (Canelo 58-56)
    7 Canelo (Canelo 68-65)
    8 Canelo (Canelo 78-74)
    9 Canelo (Canelo 88-83)
    10 Lara (Canelo 97-93)
    11 Lara (Canelo 106-103)
    12 Canelo (Canelo 116-112)

To me Canelo was clearly landing the better harder cleaner punches consistently through this fight.

Myung Woo Yuh vs Joey Olivo

Well this sucks! This is kind of like doing a jigsaw puzzle only to find a couple of missing pieces! I was watching round 5 or so I thought, when I realized it was round 6...scroll back to find no round 3. Paying closer attention lol and man round 10 is missing. As well as the first minute of rd 14. Now I scored 14 for Yuh, based upon the 2 minutes available...the thing is the pattern for most of the fight was Olivo controlling the early portion of rounds with his JAB (he needs to get mentioned the next time someone dies a best jabs thread) and fast combos, then when Yuh was able to finally get inside he seemed to close the rounds out better with the cleaner harder punches. There are only 2 rounds that I felt were decisive both towards Olivo. So scoring on the 12 full rounds available (I did not use 14 since it was incomplete, or 3 & 10). I scored it 115-115...but I don’t feel like I have enough facts to rate thedecision...enjoyable fight but left with that empty feeling of 7 missing minutes of action!

    1 Olivo
    2 Even (Olivo 20-19)
    3 MISSING
    4 Yuh (29-29)
    5 Olivo (Olivo 39-38)
    6 Yuh (48-48)
    7 Olivo (Olivo 58-57)
    8 Yuh (67-67)
    9 Olivo (Olivo 77-76)
    10 MISSING
    11 Yuh (86-86)
    12 Olivo (Olivo 96-95)
    13 Even (Olivo 106-105)
    14 incomplete
    15 Yuh (115-115)

    Draw 115-115

Does anyone know if the full fight exists?

Alexis Arguello - Alfredo Escalera 2

    R1 10-9
The feeling out stage lasted 90 seconds then they both got on with it and started blasting - Arguello with the more effective, accurate punches.

    R2 9-10
Arguello struggling to find his range in this round, Escalera boxing very well, blocking a lot of Alexis's shots and scoring well with his.

    R3 10-10
An either way kind of round; slightly favoured Escalera until Arguello put together a terrific combo at the end to take a share of the round.

    R4 10-8
Arguello takes control, dropping Escalera with a left hook.

    R5 10-7
Disastrous start to the round for Escalera; carelessly walked into another big left hook. Arguello follows up looking for the earlier-than-expected stoppage and the ref gives Escalera a standing 8 count. Then Escalera explodes! Comes gunning for Arguello and probably figures with the ref's intervention he might as well go out fighting. Respect at the end from Arguello to acknowledge Alfredo's efforts. Still, big round from Arguello and Escalera has a mountain to climb.

    R6 10-9
Ref checks on Escalera's cut; blood streaming around and under the eyes now. Arguello doing the better quality work, although still can't seem to discourage the ever-advancing Alfredo.

    R7 10-9 (v close)
    R8 9-10
    R9 9-10 (close)
R10 9-10 (tough round to score; both fighters looking tired)
R11 10-9 (Arguello stamps his authority at the beginning of the round and controls the last minute)
    R12 9-10 (close)
    R13 Arguello KOs Escalera

I made it 6-5-1 in rounds and 115-111 on points to Arguello up to the 13th round.

An unambiguously great fight and better than their first. It kind of reminds me a bit of Sanchez-Nelson in that the champion is on top by virtue of knockdowns but the challenger gets stronger as the fight goes on and is at the point of rallying when the final hammer is dropped.

Arguello must have thought he was going to finish things in the 5th when he dropped Escalera and the ref intervened with the standing 8 count but Alfredo showed remarkable heart to come back in that round and the rest of the fight.

Sorry, I got impatient! No worries, I’ll save the first one for then and I can always rewatch the second as it’s one of my all-time favs as well. It may even convince me that the first is better!

Here are a couple of Pinklon Thomas fights just for the fun of it. Thomas against Tim Witherspoon and Mike Weaver

    Round 1: 10-9 Witherspoon
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Thomas
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
Round 5: 10-8 Thomas (Point deducted from TW for repeated backhands)
    Round 6: 10-9 Thomas
    Round 7: 10-9 Thomas
    Round 8: 10-9 Witherspoon
    Round 9: 10-9 Witherspoon
    Round 10: 10-9 Thomas
    Round 11: 10-10 Even
    Round 12: 10-9 Thomas

    Total: 117-113 Thomas

Those first 4 rounds were very close and those haymakers of Witherspoon could change the complexion of a fight depending on what a judge is looking for. Actual scores were 114-114, 115-112 and 116-112 for a majority decision to Thomas.

    Round 1: 10-8 Thomas (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 Thomas
    Round 3: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 4: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 5: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 6: 10-9 Thomas
    Round 7: 10-9 Thomas
Round 8: Thomas scores a KO

Total through 7 completed rounds: 67-65 Thomas

This bout was still anybodys. The famous Weaver second wind hadn't kicked yet and I could see him eventually putting the hurt on Thomas down the stretch. But at 33 it wasn't to be and a clean one-punch KO for Thomas between two very evenly matched pugs.

Here is a fight I didn't know was out there. The second fight between Nino Valdes and Bob Baker. Two fighters who really deserved respective shots at Marciano. Regardless, the reports on this fight suggested it wasn't much of a fight, but I found it to be a good fight. 10 point must system in effect.

    Round 1: 10-9 Valdes
    Round 2: 10-9 Baker
    Round 3: 10-9 Baker
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Baker
    Round 6: 10-9 Valdes
    Round 7: 10-9 Valdes
    Round 8: 10-9 Baker
    Round 9: 10-9 Baker
    Round 10: 10-9 Baker

    Total: 97-94 Baker

That last round could have been scored even - they really let it all hang out - but I thought Baker was just that much more pinpoint. Again, I thought it was a good contest. Actual scores were 97-95, 99-91 and 98-92 all for Baker.

I had posted this on the FOTW thread, but it belongs here. Patterson v Ellis

    Round 1: Ellis
    Round 2: Patterson
    Round 3: Ellis
    Round 4: Patterson
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Patterson
    Round 7: Patterson
    Round 8: Patterson
    Round 9: Ellis
    Round 10: Patterson
    Round 11: Ellis
    Round 12: Ellis
    Round 13: Patterson
    Round 14: Patterson
    Round 15: Ellis

    Total: 8-6-1 Patterson

I should mention a couple of things about referee Harold Valan. First, not scoring the 14th a knockdown for Patterson was irrelevant, because he did score the round for Patterson and on a rounds basis Patterson wasn't going to get any extra points anyway. I do feel it was a knockdown and Ellis can be seen shaking his head in order to clear the cobwebs. You don't do that after a slip. I do agree with what Valan said at the end, that Patterson wasn't throwing enough punches. I did feel he threw enough, but his workrate could have been better. Considering his age, it is what it is, and still a monumental performance.

I don't normally sit through a grainy film due to the fact much can be lost on perception. However, this was ...OK. Jesus Pimental vs. Jose Medel over 10 rounds, California scoring. One point for a round, none for even rounds and an extra point for a knockdown.

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Medel
    Round 3: Medel
Round 4: Pimental (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: Pimental
Round 6: Pimental (on the film this was an abbreviated round so I had to take a leap of faith on what I had seen up to that point)
    Round 7: Medel
    Round 8: Even
Round 9: Medel (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Round 10: Pimental

    Total: 6-5 Medel

Actual scores were 7-4 (twice) and 8-6 all for Medel. Not only was this fight hard-banging it was a pleasure watching the traps Medel was setting along the ropes. He had a sharp, speedy jab and was a killer counter-puncher. Pimental's jab was hard and not so speedy, but his power was evident. Damn good fight and I would have loved to have been at ringside. The sound of these bombs they were throwing had to be sublime.
