    I was looking up Joe Bugners record and was surprised to see he started his career with a KO loss. Illunga Makubu is another fighter who started with a KO loss. Can anyone name any other boxers who went on to have successful careers despite loosing their debuts by knockout? Honorable mentions to Bernard Hopkins who started with MD loss and Johnny Nelson PTS loss.

    Alexis Arguello didnt lose his first fight, but his third. And his fourth too. Yet, he's another beast of the ring that will be remembered forever.

    Eric Molina was knocked out in the first round of his debut fight but became a 2-time world title challenger. Almost got Wilder out of there too.

    Rafael Marquez was KO'd in 8 by Victor Rabanales 39-14-2 who was a damned good fighter. Beware of Mexicans with double digit loses you might get a nasty surprise.

    For a second I thought you were going to talk bad about Victor. I saw him live a couple times and he was tough.

    I think that the great Benny Leonard lost his first by ko.

    There have been lots and lots of boxers, who got ko'd in their first fight - but despite this went on to have successful careers.

    If we concentrate on future world champions alone, I suspect the list would still be pretty long (at least a couple of dozen, would be my guess).

    Cool. Wayne McCullouch said Rabanales had the best chin out of everyone he fought.

    'McCullough credits his 13th fight, against Victor Rabanales, as the one that gave him the confidence to see what Futch already knew: “I remember saying to my wife after that fight, ‘I’m going to be world champion for sure because this guy is as tough as anybody.‘ That’s the first time I said professional boxing is such a tough sport.”

    Victor Rabanales: That’s a hard one too. Some of the Mexicans have tough chins, you hit them and they look at you so you hit them again and they look at you and then you hit them with a body shot and they crumble.

    The Mexicans, they’re all tough – Zaragoza, Morales, Jose Luis Bueno. I didn’t take any easy fights coming up, I took tough fights against Mexicans.

    Rabanales really did have a concrete chin. That was my 13th fight and his 50th fight and he was a former champion, No. 1 in the world. I hit him with everything and he hit me with everything too. That was the first time in boxing I lost a round. When I hit him in the chin he didn’t go anywhere. I remember looking at him and he had metal teeth! Every time I hit him it didn’t even faze him, he just kept coming and coming.'

    Yup. He lost his first two fights by knockout, but went on to be a legend of the sport. We could end the thread right here.
