Yes and no, it was indeed a choice between BJS and Canelo but that was because Golden Boy told Golovkin's team not to fight BJS in June if they wanted Canelo in September. You are right that he chose money over the chance to become undisputed, everyone knows that, but before Canelo came onto the scene he was after the best guys in the division (Pirog, Martinez, Sturm, etc)
GGG is a sell out. Many fighters and people are overall. Only very few fighters truly chase greatness. Fighters who take on all comers, who see challenges, who view legacy as more priceless than prize money.
That he did and there's nothing wrong with it but the history books will show he chose money over legacy. We as box fans like to see guys chase legacy over money and GGG certainly didn't do that. He demanded fights with Canelo and refused to fight anybody good until he got them. Canelo never had to fight Golovkin but he did and gave him an even split of the purse in both fights. He stepped up and took the risks and challenges GGG was never willing to take ,yet he's the guy that gets shat on the most.. Thats the fanboy for ya
I can’t disagree with most of that buddy. Again, money motivates most but not all boxers. Marvelous Marvin walked away even when SR was dangling more money for another fight and I will forever respect Marvin Thanks homie
It was fairly well known that GB were not happy with Golovkin's plan of Saunders in June and Canelo in September, e.g.: "Golovkin is expected to face England's Billy Joe Saunders in June in a bid to win his WBO belt to become the undisputed middleweight champion of the world—a potential fight the Canelo camp is not happy about." They later said that GGG was injured which is why the June fight didn't happen but I know from a good source that the real reason was GB negotiations, Oscar de la Hoya said that the risk was too high because if Golovkin lost or got injured in June, it wouldn't give Canelo much time to negotiate with a new opponent for his September date - understandable from their point of view, but from hindsight perhaps Golovkin should have opted for Saunders. Then again he might have been outboxed and then the 8-figure paydays are gone.
You can chase $ and greatness. Sometimes greatness and belts are different things. To fight the most popular fighter in the world to a huge global audience is chasing chasing greatness imo.
The absolute Truth!! Amen!!! Is pathetic how the ggg fan boy make all these fake news!! Triple ggg never wanted to unify the division! But he was happy fighting smaller guys, thats a joke! Why never dare to fight at 168? He knew he was gonna get **** up
If it was well known why isn't there any record of it? I ran a google search of that quote and it came up bunk. Fact is Canelo and GB never needed Golovkin and only fought him because there was so such much demand for the fight. The possibility of picking up another belt by beating Saunders and delaying the fight further isn't something Hoya would try and prevent. Gennady boy avoided Billy out of his own volition , nothing more to it than that .
