Bruno sits somewhere below Bonecrusher Smith in the grand scheme of things.

Where is the Dempsey vs Smith thread?

Bruno seems to get entirely unwarranted praise, simply because he fits the modern heavyweight template!

That's not what I was saying.

 

My money would be on Dempsey, but I think Bruno is really being undersold here. The guy could crack, and is the only fighter I ever recall seeing seriously wobble Tyson with a single punch. (I don't think even Ruddock or Lewis did that.) Bruno also gave prime Lewis all he could handle.

Dempsey most likely gets him out early or shortly after he's gassed, but I wouldn't rest easy on it by any stretch.

 

Fistic savant Luis Firpo buttered that Dempsey roll.

 

Firpo was more agressive than Bruno who was more stiff and panicked when Tyson charged in, Firpo prioved he was tougher than Bruno in his epic with Dempsey, Frank`s chin couldn`t take a hook like Dempsey`s at all.
I've seen this many times before and I'm sure many people on here have as well but I still can't get over Sugar Ray Robinson dancing like this.

I think he dances better than Gene Kelly!

I mean, could you imagine Frank Bruno doing this??

Lewis was awful v Bruno and didn`t reach his prime until Steward straightened him out.

 

You said McCall and Ferguson were dangerous, neither fighter was dangerous when Bruno met them, McCall didn`t know how to set his power shots up with the jab when he fought Bruno and Ferguson couldn`t punch like Dempsey or McCall.

 

No a lot of Americanisms have crept into the English accent like basement instead of cellar and awesome instead of marvelous.

 

Bruno didn't need Gibbons type skills. Plus he was better than Willard, Fulton and the rest of the giants that Dempsey trounced. And I never said just because you're big and a good puncher means you beat Dempsey. Too many posters on this site assume others became boxing fans yesterday.

What I typed: Bruno had the skills necessary to negate Jack Dempsey from beating him. I'm not talking about Bruno being raised in the 1900's. I'm talking about the Frank Bruno who fought in the 80's and 90's that lost to only the elite guys like Witherspoon, Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

Jack Dempsey isn't some ultimate male that could use a time machine and destroy anyone from any era at will. I shouldn't have to explain any more.

Ferguson and McCall were more dangerous than the opponents that Dempsey faced. Willard was a half retired 37 year old who had gone 10 middling rounds in the past 4 years. Fulton was a chinny hype job who was bounced off canvases from coast to coast. Firpo was a rank amateur devoid of balance or punch arsenal.

Ferguson had schooled Mercer only a year earlier, and did well in the return, too. He was enjoying something of a late career journeyman renaissance. I wouldn't pick Tommy Gibbons, Carpentier, Firpo or Brennan over him.

I was comparing them to Dempsey's competition, not to Dempsey. But we can only know a fighter by his results against his competition, so read into that what you will.

 

Come on Mark. Bruno was a manufactured fighter but he would probably trounce Tunney as well.

Bruno wasn't a speed demon but he wasn't some slow pondering oaf with power. He had an excellent jab and can control distance fairly well. His speed isn't the problem. Failing to tie a man up when hurt was his achilles heel.

How is Tunney gonna hurt Frank? Dempsey has excellent power but what happens when Bruno lands his best shots?

 

The Bruno that came into Tyson 1 came to win, he got up from a knock down, fouled, wrestled, punched back , you can fault Bruno for many things but the man was as strong as a ox etc . Granted Tyson was no longer firing on all cylinders anymore but still, Bruno did not fold like in the re match...........the punch he nailed Tyson coming in was a brutal peach of a shot IMO not too many would have taken that shot without going down or getting laid out flat but we all know now that Tyson had a dynamite chin.........the question is if hit by the same shot is Dempsey going to make it..........I am convinced that Tyson's chin is superior to Dempsey's .........the Mauler came in pretty reckless wide open sometimes giving Bruno plenty opportunities to land plus Bruno had a very heavy Ram rod jab to dictate distance.

Bruno lost only to the top crop while giving a good account of himself and on paper Dempsey "should" win with a Blitz but it is not a forgone conclusion because if Bruno lands a couple of bombs the Mauler is taking a nap for good IMO.
