McLarnin because he sports one of the all time great nicknames. Years ago I read up on their fights. They seem to be disputed decisions. With that said a boxer with the skills of Barney Ross is a tougher puzzle to solve. That lefthand was educated and he was dirt tough.
Last time I did a list (and it has been 5 years or so?) I had them both in the 20-25 range with Ross 2 slots ahead. Both are comparable....not sure I would slot them the same this time around (been working on it slowly for a couple of months, and probably won’t finish before spring/summer)...but I think either is defendable
I read the disputed decision was the only one Ross lost. Do you have more to add? Not sure if I've overlooked something
Gotta make a thread on HW’s bro...or steroids...this forum has seen better days that is for sure. Seems to be a thread worth some more discussion. I am not optimistic but wish you luck in getting more feedback
Unbelievable isnt it. I even did do a HW thread Lyle vs Bear but because it didnt have Carnera Marciano or a mediocre 80's HW it got about 6 responses lol. Like a horse with blinders on around here. The same exact people post the same exact things every day about the same 5 or so fighters lol
Hate to have to choose...the Irish in me wants to say McLarnin, but I have to go with the winner of the 2 out of three and say Ross...who was so very versatile. Actually, I'm a fan of both of them, and I wonder what would have happened in a 4th match.
RC I hate to choose also. As much as I liked these guys in ring is as much I grew to like them out of the ring after reading about them. That being said I also give Ross the edge.
Wish I knew these 2 Greats inside and out and well enough to contribute. But I did read that Packey worked with Ross early on in his career before Packey joined the commission. If true, I'm sure Ross learned a lot from a boxer said to be way ahead of his time.
I'm going with Ross and his consistent excellence at the highest level... and then there is the fact that he won their series. Multiple victories over Garcia, and Petrolle and Canzoneri and well, McLarnin show he could beat a range of styles at the top level. And you are damn sure not going to stop the guy. Both are sadly lost in consideration in these parts. At least Sly Stallone was good enough to keep the Ross name alive.
And Frank Stallone was going to do a movie on Ad Wolgast …TBH, do not know if it happened or if it was scapped
LOL I came across one of those movies the other week and was telling my wife about the whole Barney Ross name. Good call my man
I'd take McLarnin. They were virtually even during their series when Ross was at his peak. Jimmy was already on the downgrade. He had a lot of wear and tear by the time he fought Barney. He had been a kayo puncher until he busted up his hands against Loayza, Young Jack Thompson, and Billy Petrolle. Then he had to back off from the hard punching to prolong his career. Those are the reasons I'd give him an edge. With good hands, he wouldn't have had to be quite so careful.
