I don't really think the fans would want to watch Hopkins holding and looking for a way out to another loss again. You are suffering now with Calzaghe having beaten Hopkins. Just imagine how you would feel if he did it twice?

Because he was undefeated and people don't like undefeated fighters who hasn't fought anyone. Around the time he started receiving the hate was when people made a big deal out of his undefeated record after beating Jeff Lacy. Meanwhile he was fighting guys like Manfredo. Eventually, he fought Kessler which was a very good fight but then after he fought RJJ and Hopkins, both shot guys to further polish up his undefeated record. He really should have fought a Ward or Froch. I don't know why he didn't fight Ward, the one who came out on top of the super 6. That would have been a match for the ages and a pick-em. Maybe I'd favour Calzaghe even, he was that good.
Maybe because of his long list of title defense of his WBO belt against relatively unknown boxers. This is happened to my favorite boxer Chris John too. I suspect there are people don't like that kind of boxers who 'takes hostage' of the belt. However, Calzaghe eventually become unified champion himself and beat two big names in American boxing, Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr, and retired undefeated ; which I think add more number of haters. His record and journey is considered too good to be true and 'fairy tale'-like and some people just hate it and want him lose.
Well with regards to the point about Jones being washed up, this is the verbatim quote from page 300 of Calzaghe's autobiography, written in 2006 and published the following year: 'I have no interest any more in Roy Jones and no interest in Antonio Tarver. Jones is washed up and Tarver was never that good anyway, he just caught Jones when Jones was shot and Johnson did the same.' Pretty damning stuff, if you ask me. Now I do concede that I was mistaken in also attributing the 'Crown Jewels' quote re: a Jones fight to Calzaghe's book; my apologies for that. However, the point still stands. Turns out it was a 2003 interview with the Evening Standard, but keep in mind that Calzaghe was already thirty-one by this point and had been boxing at 'world title' level for six years. You might question why he was only just starting to talk up the possibility (a distant one at that) of fighting the pound for pound champion only a single weight class up from him, especially as Calzaghe spent a long time saying that he struggled to make 168. I'm not saying Calzaghe was trash, that he'd have been humiliated against Jones if he'd fought a decent version, that he doesn't deserve respect for his achievements or whatever. I'm simply countering the points that Calzaghe diehards like to put forward today. 'Jones ducked Calzaghe; Calzaghe's win over Jones is legitimately top-drawer; everyone knew how good Calzaghe was for years and was desperate to see him in there with the big names; Calzaghe was always going after the best but was avoided'....They're all myths. Nobody was really saying these things at the time for that very reason. They're the work of expedient hindsight.
Yet the so called slaps affected Hopkins so much considering Calzaghe beat him sandwiched between arguably Hopkins best wins of win Target, win Wright, loss to Calzaghe, win Pavlik, with later wins over Jones and Pascal. Guess you will have to just swallow it
Arguably the most ignorant post on this thread. Calzaghe had moved up to LHW had 2 fights and retired before Froch even won a LHW title dummy. Ward was a 15 fight novice in a different division when Calzaghe retired and not even a factor. Ward ended up fighting Calzaghes leftovers at SMW
