that wasn't the one Kings guys had though. i think the Kiltschko's had it towards the end of Lewis career.
WBO belt didn't matter back then at heavyweight, it's only during Wlad's era that it really became seen as a genuine world title at heavyweight. Lewis was the last undisputed heavyweight champion with the WBC, WBA and IBF belts when he beat Holyfield for all the belts. https://static.boxrec.com/thumb/c/c...G_evander-holyfield-lennox-lewis_I_poster.jpg
The WBO wasn`t that established when Holy and Lewis unified the more established belts, in the early 90`s the WBO was a joke, with lesser fighters winning that belt and not really being recognised as much as champs who held the older belts, maybe by `99 they meant a bit more, but I don`t remember even knowing who WBO champ was in `99, Lewis was considered the proper champ as far as I knew.
Wlad had the WBO belt near the end of Lewis' reign, losing it to Sanders' just before Lewis' last fight.
I think in the 90's the WBO belt was more the British/European belt. It was only later on when it started getting more traction in other parts of the world, particularly in America, that it started being recognised as a 'proper' belt.
apparently he was undisputed for a short time. then King sued for Ruiz to get a title shot. Lewis got permission to fight Grant instead. this caused the WBA top start the "super" champ bs. so we have King, Ruiz, Lewis, and Holyfield to thank for this mess. along with the WBA.
Vitali won it from Herbie Hide in `92 but it wasn`t recognised as an official title really back then, it was quite a new organisation and only lesser respected fighters would fight for it or young fighters etc.
Yes, but Mercer wasn`t recognised as the heavyweight champ when he won that bout, either Douglas or Tyson was the champ and I think Holy went to KO Douglas that year, nobody cared about the WBO at that time at all.
wbo champs in order up unti '03. Damiani, Mercer, Moorer, Morrison, Bentt, Hide, Bowe, Akinwande, Hide, Vitali, Byrd, Wlad, Sanders. not too bad a list.
Damiani, Mercer, Moorer, Morrison, Bentt, Hide, Bowe, Akinwande were not considered the real champ while they were champs and none of these guys were rated as the best heavy in the world while they held the WBO crown. Akinwande was odd in losing his bout to Lewis.
