The long and the short and the tall. Lanky power hitter Tito v stubby hooker, tough as boots Basilio.15 rds ,whom do you like?
Basilio, he proved himself against Robi, Trnidad never beat a fighter of the quality of Robi, I feel Robi would have dealt with Tito easier than he did Carmen I also feel Gavilan would have landed more on Tito than he did on Baslio, I saw a study on Carmen v the Cuban hawk and they were doing stuff in there that Tito had never seen, I feel DLH was overated too.
Kind of amusing but read story years ago at the IBHOF. About these two getting heated over some loud music. At the time Trinidad was the IBF Welterweight Champ. Mattered none to Basilio. As to the matchup I think Basilio was very strong at '47. He also was slicker at midrange and he was good inside. Basilio could hit as well. Tito had an advantage in height but won't use it completely. His jab was decent but Carmen may sneak in a few as well. What Trinidad wanted was to keep you at midrange take your head off with those quick hooks and uppercuts. He was precise from there. One thing I could say 100% is that both of these guys would be in great condition and had outstsanding stamina. I would lean towards Basilo by late round knockout. Never mess with an onion farmer who happens to also be a Marine.
Two of my favourites. I have Basilio as a top 15 ww and Tito as a top 20. This is a can't-miss action fight. Trinidad is the bigger hitter, but Basilio had a great chin. Trinidad could be a slow starter but got stronger as a fight went on. I don't see Basilio going straight after him either, even though that would be his best chance of an early KO. Basilio had great championship-level experience at ww against Gavilan, DeMarco and Saxton but Trinidad beat some good fighters early in his title reign and some top names towards the end of it. I'm struggling to pick a winner but I lean towards Basilio, just cause he could tough it out. But great, great matchup!
basilio fought before 1960 so obviously him! duh like fighters back then were super human .. no way anyone today could ever figure them out
Tito s best shots bang off the chin of Basilio but through sheer persistence he works away at his opponent. Felix was a solid puncher but had a leaky defense ,which Carmen would drill through .His face would be battered slightly but its Basilio s hand's raised at the final bell . Basilio W un Trinidad.
I lean towards a close Basilio decision over 12 or Carmen stopping Tito in 13-15...but not confident that Tito couldn’t pull out a win. Good hypothetical
If your going to be a smart ass, at least know that Trinidad's last pro fight was over 10yrs ago, and he was at his best about 10yrs prior to his last fight, so no that wouldn't be "Today" or even "Recently ". On the fight itself, I'd lean toward Basilo over Trinidad. Basilo would nullify Trinidad's power by being in his chest, not giving him room to get the leverage on his punches to be able to actually hurt him. Basilo would keep the fight in a phone booth, wear Trinidad down , go on to a dec, or late stoppage, esp over a 15rd fight. If he could do it to Robinson, even a slightly pass prime Robinson. Don't see no reason he couldn't do it to Trinidad.
I don't dispute that outcome but make no mistake Tito was more than a solid puncher at 47. He moved guys with glancing blows
Basilio was tough as they come, but very hittable. Anyone with Basilio's style got chopped up coming at Tito. That was his strong suit. I don't think Basilio had the defense to prevent getting busted up too bad to continue. Tito also had the gas tank and mentality to keep those hooks and right hands coming for as long as it took. Basilio came with great pressure, had some pop, and was as gritty as they come, but that's not enough here. Tito wont fade, he won't stop blasting targets as long as they're presented. Tito had problems with movers and great defensive fighters, and Basilio was neither. Tito stops him on cuts or breaks him down before the championship rounds, so by the 10th-12th.
