Fighters cut from the same cloth get plenty of praise and attention because they won a belt and yes winning that belt deserves it. Lopez obviously didnt but he had every bit as much warrior spirit as Chicon Franklin ( who beat him twice) Gatti ect. Lopez was the consummate professional in my book. A warrior in the truest sense of the word. Can't remember the last time I saw him mentioned here so giving him some much deserved respect and attention.
Good post. He was really good fighter and a ferocious body puncher that fought in probably the toughest era for the lightheavyweight division. Tons of respect for him as a fighter.
Count me in! Loved watching him fight. Here is his “best I faced” https://www.ringtv.com/548077-best-i-faced-yaqui-lopez/
When you look at his record it becomes mesmerizing. Fought world champs Victor Galindez (twice), John Conteh, Saad Muhammad (twice), Michael Spinks, Mike Rossman, Carlos Deleon and S.T. Gordon. Also fought top contenders James Scott, Jesse Burnett (4 times), Mike Quarry, Tony Mundine and Andy Kendall. Wow!
Can't say anything negative about him. The only thing I will say is that if he had been based in Mexico instead of CA, he may have gotten more breaks with the WBC
Well I've mentioned him.I just looked at him on boxrec, surprised to see most of his opponents he beat didn't have the greatest records. But I don't care, he was a great fighter. I loved to watch him fight back in the day. A guy couldn't be tougher than Lopez. He was non stop and talented
By all accounts he was a true gentleman, on top of everything else. I met him briefly in 1984 in Eureka, CA when he brought his amateur boxing team from Stockton to box our kids on a Saturday night card. I remember him being a nice, soft-spoken guy, who showed no ego whatsoever. I wish I would've asked him about his career or at least told him how I'd enjoyed his fights, but as a shy teenager myself I just sat next to him thinking, "OMG, I'm sitting next to Yaqui Lopez!"
LOL! Reminds me of a few years back when they were filming a movie outside the building I work in. Some of the employees were headed out to have a look at a 'celebrity'. They said to me, "Dude, come on, Brad Pitt is out there." I just sneered at them and said, "You guys go ahead, but when Yaqui Lopez shows up, come and get me."
AN exceptional warrior .. I feel he would have defeated a Virgil Hill if he was a contender in that era .. the only negative was his post Mike Rossman fight interview when he said multiple times he was happy he knocked out the "loud mouth Jew boy."
sweetsci, unreal! I probably would have done the same the and never forgave myself. At least you met him!
