Spence has a dreadful defense

Are you picking Garcia to beat Spence?

 

Hell no Spence defense is ok but it sucks for him being rated p4p

 

His defense was pretty basic vs Brook. BDA broke it down pretty well.
His main defense is distance control via lead hand, stepping back and holding up a high guard. He doesn't really move his head at all and rarely steps off the line.

He doesn’t have a terrible defence, he is an offensively minded fighter, so yes he gets hit and he ain’t slick but his whole style is predicated on always being in a position to dish out punishment. If his defence was so bad then someone like mayweather wouldn’t be such a fan of his after sparring him.

 

I don't like Spence for the same reasons I never used to like GGG he has fought weak comp his best win is Brook who was coming off a bad loss to GGG and now Spence is happy to fight a guy who used to fight at 126 but is now jumping up 2 weight classes. Both GGG and Canelo got given loads of crap for the same thing. Spence passes the eye test but his chin really hasn't been tested.

 

Its far better than average, it's not flashy but very effective. He might be the best judge of distance in boxing. He stays just at the very edge of where his opponent can ALMOST hit him while simultaneously being able to land on his opponent or make a quick and simple move in just enough to get in and reach and then hes back out. Basic high guard but hands basically always where they need to be. Little head or upperbody movement and doesnt seem to possess great reflexes, his defense is all about his range, high guard, footwork, and his offense. Simple, sounds way easier than it actually is, and very effective. Movers with very good knee bend, waist bend, long reach, fast hands and feet and good durability will give him his realist issues. Guys like that though -- they twnd to not come around much. Crawford will be his worst style matchup and imo is the better fighter p4p(slightly) but I still dont think id favor either over the other at this point.

 

Youre one of the few besides myself that hasnt jumped on the Spence bandwagon. I like him dont get me wrong but i dont see the next great WW like many think and one reason is his defense. His offense is also predicated on cutting the ring and making his target as stationary as possible so he can unload those powerful body shotHe is too easy to hit and i have serious doubts about his chin. I mean he got buzzed a couple times against Brook with shots that didnt seem that heavy. I think Crawford beats him and its problably not close. If im Spences people i keep him as far from TC as possible. Just a bad matchup.

 

I agree I would back Crawford to beat him something like 9-3 or 8-4. I wouldn't be shocked if Thurman was able to stop him I could even see Danny Garcia timing him and dropping him.
I won't be surprised if Mikey Garcia is up on the cards before Spence finally stops him.

 

His defense was fine against Brook.

 

Spence needs to learn some defensive tricks from Golovkin.

 

I’d be shocked if thurman ever got in the ring with Spence period.
