How did Mikey Garcia become so highly rated?

Mikey Garcia gets a ton of free passes for reasons unknown... 40 year old Pacquiao just dominated Broner more than Mikey and Maidana did, but Pacquiao hasn't received anywhere close to the same credit.

The odds against Spence have narrowed because of a combination of Mikey's confidence (fair play to him since he does sound really confident) and people realizing that Spence's best win is a badly damaged and weight-drained Brook.

 

The first time I heard about him was about 10 years ago, when he was sparring partner to Chris John for his second fight with Juarez. I heard he knocked John down in one of sparring sessions. I couldn't believe it at the first time I heard it since I heard it from someone with everybody in the camp were all tight-lipped about it , it's almost like gossip. But John himself once said that he is a great prospect and will be world champion in the future.

 

He dominated a guy Loma lost to

Is his resume the deepest? No its just ok

But he has elite.skills & never been close to beat

 

His resume is not much different then Crawfords, who is most peoples P4p #1

 

I think Mikey's resume is underrated.

That's three unbeaten champs in his last four fights, plus a four weight champion.

I don't think there are too many in boxing who can boast much better than that.

 

His pre-hiatus resume is actually pretty solid. He was quite dominant against some good fighters.

But since then...meh.
He is actually still one of my favs.. I dont know I just like him..but he looks he is slipping or a little less motivated.

Still gotta give the guy some dues for jumping up and taking a body snatcher like Spence on.

 

I think he is overrated.

He seem's to run through the divisions, but which TOP champ has he ever beat in any of them? He has NEVER beaten "the man" in any division he has been in.

His "achievements" are all smoke & mirrors.

Not really. His resume is quite impressive, but people seems tend to forget and overlook.

Though not all of them are top class fighters, number of world champions he defeated is around tens.

He beat Juanma, Salido, Martinez who were big players in featherweight / superfeatherweight division. He also steamrolled other young world ranked American prospect like Remillard and a world title contender like Concepcion.

But if I were asked about the weakness of his resume, I'd say maybe his lack of intention to pursue of unification in the past. He didn't face Uchiyama, the WBA champion who was quite a heavy-hitter. And he was quite inactive during 2014-2016, only fight one bout which against Rojas, maybe due to his dispute with Top Rank.

 

There is a bit of that and it is a valid point. But it was the same with Cotto and no doubt he's going to the hall of fame.

Anyway, hopefully the Spence fight ends the debate.

 

Maybe, but Cotto (other than not facing Golovkin) fought a ton of top fighters.

Garcia seem's to be on a huge cash-grab because of his few years away from the sport.

 

I don't think he's anything special either. Being a multi-weight champion these days doesn't mean much when there's so many titles to pick and choose your way through the divisions.

Even if you ignore his resume and just look at his actual ability he seems a solid enough fighter but nothing about him stands out as being special. If Spence is half the fighter his fans hope he is, he should deal with Garcia without too much difficulty.
