Last week I finished Betulio Gonzalez-Shoji Oguma II. I have to say, for flyweights it was pretty devoid of action and dull, except for the drama that built in the second half of the fight as Gonzalez fought his way back into it.

The first half saw both waiting for the other to commit, so little was thrown or landed. Oguma was just a little sharper and quicker and banked round after round. After nine rounds, I had him running away with it, 7-2. All the rounds were close, but he was winning almost all of them.

Then Gonzalez started winning rounds. At first it seemed too little too late as all Oguma had to do was win one more round to put him over the top. And I waited and waited for that decisive round to come and it just never came. Suddenly, I realized that after 14 rounds I had it dead even at 7-7. Miraculous comeback by Gonzalez. It wasn't exactly a free for all in the 15th, but both fought as if they needed the round. On my card, they did. It was like the others in that there wasn't much to choose from and it could probably have gone either way. I had it for Oguma, finally, finally giving him that round to put him over the top.

Gonzalez went nuts in protest, but I don't see too much reason for him to complain. Far too close in every round and everything seemed very inconclusive the whole way.

Scoring some FOTW matches and wanted to score Victor Galindez Vs Yaqui Lopez I before I get to the 2nd one. Good fight. Tale of 2 fights for me with neither guy dominating the fight even if they ran off a few rounds. To me Yaqui controlled but didn’t dominate 1-7, and Galindez contrilled But didn’t dominate 8-15. Heard that Galindez was struggling with bronchitis leading into the fight? Not sure if it is true. Galindez’s punches were wild and sloppy at times but he was as tough and physical as ever even if he didn’t look his best. Galindez was very dirty and hit with low blows and behind the head multiple (understatement) times with no warnings. Finally received a warning in rd 11, 2 in 14 and 2 in 15. But like Quarry said if you don’t take a point he will keep doing it. On
My card he was lucky not to receive a deduction because he would have lost his belt....probably not the case for the judges.

Quarry and Squire were very good competent commentators and wished we had more fights with them. Enjoyed Quarry scoring the fight after me and only had 3 rounds different. I gave the 3rd to Lopez and he had it even, I scored 5 even he scored Lopez evening our cards back up...then he gave 7 to Galindez I scored Lopez making his a 2 point win and mine a draw!

    RBR
    1 Lopez
    2 Galindez (19-19)
    3 Lopez (Lopez 29-28)
    4 Lopez (Lopez 39-37)
    5 DRAW (Lopez 49-47)
    6 Lopez (Lopez 59-56)
    7 Lopez (Lopez 69-65)
    8 Galindez (Lopez 78-75)
    9 Galindez (Lopez 87-85)
    10 Galindez (Lopez 96-95)
    11 Galindez (Lopez 105-105)
    12 Lopez (Lopez 115-114)
    13 Lopez (Lopez 125-123)
    14 Galindez (Lopez 134-133)
    15 Galindez (Draw 143-143)

Galindez didn’t win on my card but did deserve to keep his belt! So even though I don’t think he won, no miscarriage of justice, except perhaps for the ref who didn’t control the fight fairly. Decent job by the judges with no unfair wide cards

Finally got around to watching Jermell Charlo vs Tony Harrison and all I can say is I do not understand these loud cries of robbery on Facebook and YouTube comment sections, I swear they attract the biggest no-nothing fans of the sport

I had it 114-114 or 6-6 in rounds

    I scored Harrison rounds 2-4, 9 and 10
    Charlo I had win rounds 1, 6-8, 11 and 12

I did give Harrison round 2 but felt a little guilty about it but then again Hazzard Jr gave Harrison the 6th

Here is a summary of my takeaways:

-The crowd did not boo the decision
-Charlo's corner begged him to go for the KO going into round 12
-After round 10 PBC highlights of the first 10 rounds showed more highlights for Harrison than Charlo
    -Charlo ate jabs all night
-Harrison landed solid counter rights all night and typically responded with a counter any time Charlo landed something
-Charlo missed constantly and his jab was not effective at all

That commentary team was an echo chamber of terrible
"he cant win by boxing like this"
"he cant get a decision in a championship fighting this defensive"
-they ignored constant good work by Harrison and were giving Charlo points for missing punches and merely coming forward. Round 9 was especially nauseating as Charlo got nailed by a right hand and put his gloves out and the team still had something negative to say about Harrison after Charlo landed nothing of note in the round and swallowed a right hand with no response

I'm not trying to sound biased I just thought the commentary crew was awful, the Larry Hazzard scorecard was dreadful but not as bad as his score in the main event with Jermall Charlo vs Korobov, and the cries of foul and robbery are just way off the mark

That said I think the 116-112 for Harrison is a poor score but I think 115-113 is well within the realm of possibility just flip round 6 on my card and tuh duh

I think a rematch would be a very interesting fight. I saw both Charlos that night as plodding, easily countered and not able to adapt or adjust. However, both gutted out the final rounds of the fight and had big 12th rounds when they needed it and I have to commend them for that. Jermell hits very hard and Harrison was cognoscente of that fact all night and fought accordingly. Harrison caught the attention of Charlo a few times but only seemed to rock him maybe one time. Can Harrison fight that safe, careful and limiting fight for 12 rounds again and win? I dont know. Can Charlo improve his jab and be better prepared for counters, we will see. I will say there were still plenty of missed opportunities for Harrison with Charlo completely out of position when missing that did not get taken advantage of

    Fernando Vargas vs Winky Wright

I had this fight even 114-114 or 6 rounds a piece

    Vargas taking: 1,3,4,7,10,and 12
    Wright winning: 2,5,6,8,9,and 11

I agreed with Davd Hess who had it 114-114 too
The 116-112 was far too wide
    Lederman had it 115-113 Wright

Lederman and I had it even after 6 and the punch stats were basically level kind of how Pacquiao vs Marquez II was at stretches. I dont like to cite punch stat but I think in this case it is a good indicator of how close the match started off.

I thought Wright's corner made a big mistake telling him he was up big after round 9 and Wright clearly took his foot off the gas losing the 10th and the 12th and on my card not closing the fight allowed Vargas all he needed to pull even from behind.

Post fight Vargas cited out of the ring distractions as a reason behind his performance. I dont like excuses but I would say he looked a little flat compared to other performances and even maybe a little softer as far as hisbody goes.

I just watched a terrific 10 rounder from Madison Square Garden. The first fight between Benny 'Kid' Paret and Gaspar Ortega. Let me tell you, wow! Scored on the NY rounds basis.

Round 1: Even (This was Paret's round by a shade, but Ortega pulled it even with an amazing flurry in the last 10 seconds)
    Round 2: Ortega
    Round 3: Ortega
    Round 4: Ortega
    Round 5: Ortega
    Round 6: Ortega
    Round 7: Paret
    Round 8: Ortega
    Round 9: Paret
    Round 10: Even

    Total: 6-2-2 Ortega

Actual scores were 6-4 and 5-4-1 for Ortega and 6-4 for Paret. And believe me every round was close. I think the best round was the first, but in the 10th, they just laid their heads on one another and banged away for 3 minutes. Great fight and this mere 10 rounder would put 'championship' fights today to shame. Again, close fight and its what you prefer. Paret's heavier punching or the busier style of Ortega.

Sal, I just saw you scored this fight as well. Was that not a terrific fight? Although our scores differ, it was that kind of a fight.

Here are a couple of Marco Antonio Barrera fights I watched not too long ago.

Junior Jones vs. Marco Antonio Barrera II

    Round 1: 10-9 Jones
    Round 2: 10-9 Barrera
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Jones
    Round 5: 10-9 Jones
    Round 6: 10-9 Barrera
    Round 7: 10-9 Jones
    Round 8: 10-9 Jones
Round 9: 10-8 Jones (point deducted from Barrera for continued low-blows - 3rd warning)
    Round 10: 10-9 Jones
    Round 11: 10-9 Barrera
    Round 12: 10-9 Barrera

    Total: 116-112 Jones

Actual scorecards were 116-111, 114-113 and 114-112 all for Jones

Amazing how a fighter can show up and have that Indian hex over a great. And this is the case here. You gotta give Jones his due.

Marco Antonio Barrera v Kennedy McKinney. An awesome fight. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 MAB
    Round 2: 10-9 MAB
    Round 3: 10-9 McKinney
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 McKinney
    Round 6: 10-9 MAB
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-7 MAB (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Round 9: 10-8 MAB (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: 10-9 McKinney
    Round 11: 10-8 McKinney (scores a knockdown)
    Round 12: MAB stops McKinney

Total through 11 completed rounds: 105-102 Barrera

Official scores were 106-100 by all 3 judges. I just felt it was a bit tighter, but a terrific fight nonetheless.

Philly, these two might be candidates for FOTW.

@mrkoolkevin heads up the FOTW as it was his idea! I just make recs and am along for the ride. I watch 10-20 fights a week and will pretty much score anything I can get my hands on!

    GGG vs Canelo Alvarez I
This is a decent technical fight, but lacked in some of the excitement I was hoping for both then and now. I don’t know where my original scorecard is but I did end with the same outcome just not sure if the rounds are the same...oh well.

The fight: in a nutshell I think Álvarez landed the better harder more telling shots. GGG forced the action dictating the pace of the fight and throwing and landing more shots. I know many/most feel GGG won but I feel many rounds could be tight and scored in a variety of ways. I think 116-112 is realistic for either guy although I have it just a bit tighter. Anyone saying it is wider...and well I question your impartiality and judging. The 118-110 card is as poor as the SRL- Hagler 118-110 card, and both mar what were otherwise interesting if not exciting fights.

Both fighters have/had a lot of in ring respect for the other, as evidenced by some tentativeness reluctance to let it fly. A shame that fans on both sides lack that respect for them both, as they are both great!

Kenny Bayless deserves some props and for much of the fight I didn’t even realize he was there. He did great at staying out of the video frame and the action, and although it was a pretty clean fight, he didn’t interject other than the few times he needed to. Great job Kenny

    RBR
    1 Canelo (10-9)
    2 Canelo (Canelo 20-18)
    3 GGG (Canelo 29-28)
    4 GGG (38-38)
    5 GGG (GGG (48-47)
    6 Canelo (57-57)
    7 GGG (GGG 67-66)
    8 GGG (GGG 77-75)
    9 GGG (GGG 87-84)
    10 Canelo (GGG 96-94)
    11 Canelo (GGG 105-104)
    12 Canelo (114-114)
    Draw 114-114

I think both guys could have done more to win decisively but neither guy did and I am happy with the official draw apart from Byrd’s card which I do feel is among the worst I have seen (SRL 118-110 Hagler or Roland Dakin 149-137 Minter over Antuofermo off the top of my head) and detracts from 2 otherwise solid fighters. I expect to get ripped by GGG fanboys Or Canelo haters but don’t really care.

I felt there was 2 very very clear not quite wide round but close to it. Rd 4 for GGG and 12 for Canelo (1-1)

I felt there were 6 close rounds that were still a slight favorite. 3 for GGG 3,7,8 and 3 for Canelo 1,2,11. So after what I feel are 8 fairly easy rounds to score....4-4 which is why I feel 116-112 for either guy is realistic and anything wider is not fair or impartial.

4 what I felt were very close rounds 5-6 & 9-10 I split between the 2 guys 2-2.... not on purpose lol. I might score these 4 rounds different each time I watch this fight. Once again I am sure many will disagree.

On the positive side I rewatched this with the UK commentary and found it much more enjoyable and unbiased even though they favored GGG 8-4 & 7-5 they were not actively campaigning for one fighter nor trying to sway viewer opinion like their American counterparts.
