Average. Jake had problems with his hands.

 

So did Floyd.

 

Jake threw short punches his jab was completely untelegraphed, if he threw with more power his punches would have been harder to land, his combos were really quick because of how he threw his punches, very hard to evade indeed, he didn`t usually need power.

 

His wife can verify the power in his fists.

 

I think he hit harder than his record suggests.

He seemed to put more of a premium on volume than on power.

One thing for sure- with LaMotta, you better come in shape and on top of your game, because he's coming like an avalanche and given the opportunity, he will knock you out.

LaMotta is that guy whose KO % isn't nearly as good as his power

 

Jakes power is underrated due to the consistency of fights he had and the high level opponents he fought. Fighting often means you are much more likely to injure your hands, and lose a payday or title opportunity. If Mayweather fought back then he would have a very low KO percentage.

This can also be seen in fighters like Jimmy Mclarnin, who had huge power but low KO%.

 

He also fought a pretty terrific level of opposition from fairly early on opposed to one padded with light touches .. he was not a monster one punch guy but certainly had enough to hold his own ...

The less you put into each punch, the more you can throw. So for some volume punchers, I think they just don't load up, and focus on quantity over quality.

some guys do. Then you have guys like Hagler, who people overlook and you see when he was 60-2-2. he had 50 knockouts, which was a good knockout percentage. Yet people don't see Hagler as a knockout puncher.
